The Appeal

Described by Classic & Sports Car magazine as the gateway into the classic car world, the MGB is a true motoring icon that retains a huge following in the UK and around the world.

The car was launched in 1962 and was an instant hit; the car’s popularity meant that although production was originally intended to continue for seven years, it was extended again and again until the last car was made in 1980, and the basic body shape remained the same throughout the eighteen years of its production. In total more than half a million MGBs and variants were produced, and the cars remain popular with classic-car enthusiasts to this day.

First registered in 1973 and having had only four owners including the vendor, PCS 114 M has been subject to a full restoration by the vendor and is ready to be driven and enjoyed.

The History and Paperwork

  • British Motor Heritage certificate
  • MoT- and tax-exempt
  • MGB owners’ manual
  • Current V5
  • Restoration pictures
  • Paperwork from throughout the car’s history
The vendor purchased the car in 2019 as a ‘project’ in poor condition. He spent the next two years on a full restoration, which has been done to an extremely high standard. Having owned an MGB in his younger days, the vendor had intended to keep the car but admits that he doesn’t enjoy driving it as much as he had hoped and finds it awkward to get in and out of. He has therefore decided to sell it.

The car comes with a British Motor Heritage certificate that verifies it factory records, plus an amazing file of paperwork that dates back right through the car’s history, including invoices, past MoTs, correspondence and so on, plus photos of the restoration.

The Interior

  • Superb seats in excellent condition
  • Immaculate carpets
  • Sound-deadening under carpets
  • Smart dashboard and dials
  • Moto-Lita steering wheel
  • Modern stereo with USB port
The car’s interior looks fantastic and has been restored with originality in mind. It’s clearly done few miles since being restored (the vendor reports that he has driven it no more than 500 miles since the restoration) as there is virtually no evidence of wear and tear.
The black seats are in superb condition, the driving position is comfortable and there’s a Moto-Lita steering wheel. The carpets are in similarly excellent condition, and as part of the restoration the vendor fitted sound-deadening to the floorpan.

The walnut dashboard, the dials, the switchgear and the centre-console are all in first-class condition; the vendor has added a modern stereo and speakers behind the seats.
In the boot is a spare wheel and tyre, a clean carpet lining, plus a battery isolator switch, a jack and a spanner for removing the wheel spinners.

The Exterior

  • Lovely metallic blue paintwork
  • Wire wheels in excellent condition
  • Soft-top in superb condition
  • Full tonneau cover and hood cover
  • Luggage rack on rear
The car was originally Harvest Gold; the vendor didn’t like the colour and decided, when restoring it, to have it repainted in a smart metallic blue colour – it’s actually a Renault colour. Having purchased more than the specialist paint shop who did the work required, the vendor will supply a full 2.5 litre tin of paint with the car. The car has been garaged all the time since being restored, and has covered very few miles in that time; its exterior condition reflects this.

Although the body shell is original, the vendor fitted new wheel-arches and new sills. The respray has clearly been done to a very high standard, although there a couple of scuffs on the driver’s door where the vendor caught it on the wall of his garage, and a scratch on the bonnet. The metallic blue paint looked fantastic in the early spring sunshine on the day of our photo shoot .

The chrome bumpers have some patina but look good, and the badges and brightwork are also extremely good.

The wire wheels are all in excellent condition, with no damage or corrosion, and the tyres (including the spare) have plenty of tread.

The hood was replaced as part of the restoration and so is in extremely good condition. The car comes with a full tonneau cover and a hood cover, not pictured, and there is a luggage rack mounted on the boot.

The Mechanics

  • 1798cc petrol engine
  • Excellent mechanical restoration
  • Cylinder head ground and hardened
  • Clean and tidy engine bay
  • New petrol pump
  • New fuel tank
  • New wiring looms fitted
Having had a previous career as a mechanic, the vendor undertook the mechanical restoration work himself, and has clearly done a very good job. Everything under the bonnet looks great.

The cylinder head has been reground and hardened to accept the use of unleaded fuel, and the car has also been fitted with a new petrol pump and fuel tank.

While the car starts readily and runs nicely, and the vendor reports that it drives and handles well, he suggests it would benefit from a tune-up, having done only a few miles since restoration.

Summary

A good-looking, well-engineered car with plenty of interior space, and with fantastic parts, specialist and owners-club support, there are few classics that are such fun to drive and yet so practical to own as the MGB. This one has been thoroughly and sympathetically restored and is ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. With summer on its way, there couldn’t be a better time to snap up a roadster.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
