Pininfarina knows a thing or two about elegant car design, and convertibles in particular are a speciality of the Turinese firm.
This 1973 Peugeot 504 Cabriolet is Pininfarina at its best. With its clean, understated lines, this rare model has become increasingly sought-after by collectors who appreciate its blend of French engineering and Italian styling flair.

Our 1973 example stands out as one of the few surviving Italian-registered 504 convertibles still in well-preserved condition. Finished in its original Rosso Amaranto (Amaranth Red) exterior with a Nero/Marrone Chiaro (Black/Light Brown) interior, it presents an attractive proposition for enthusiasts.
The current owner purchased it in 2018. Having been maintained with care and kept in private garages throughout the current ownership, this 504 Cabriolet offers a wonderful example for collectors of the marque.
The vendor says:
"The car drives very well. The engine is responsive and reacts well even at low revs. It feels like driving in the old days, very relaxed. I never felt that it consumed a lot of fuel, and you can drive it smoothly with just a touch of the accelerator. You could drive for hours with the wind in your hair. The steering is a little stiff due to the lack of power steering, but you don't notice this when driving. It doesn't go unnoticed when you take it to rallies or go for a drive.
"It is one of the few surviving Italian 504 convertibles in Italy in good condition and well preserved. I bought it after seeing it on TV in a drama series starring Gigi Proietti. At the time, the actor was driving the official Peugeot Italia 504 convertible. Since then, I have done a lot of research and had to search hard to find it. I am selling it reluctantly because I no longer have the time to look after it."

History and Paperwork
- First registered in 1973
- Two former registered keepers
- 87,110 km indicated and believed accurate
- The seller purchased the car in April 2018 after seeing it on television
- The previous keeper had inherited it from his aunt, who lived on Lake Como
- The car has always been registered in Italy
- The vehicle is registered with the Automotoclub Storico Italiano
- The Revisione (Italian safety inspection) has been successfully renewed on the 29th August 2025
- The seller has the original technical manual with all spare part codes and electrical diagrams
- Most maintenance was performed at a Peugeot garage
- Not all repairs are documented, as many parts were sourced from private sellers on specialised French websites
- Since the current ownership, the car has always been kept in a private garage or at the maintenance garage
- The seller is reluctantly selling because they no longer have time to care for it
- The car was stationary for ten years before the previous keeper
- Comprehensive work carried out includes dashboard replacement with an original period-correct one, fuel tank coating, starter motor and transmission overhaul, convertible top replacement, and bodywork polishing

The Condition
- The car was repainted in 2018 in its original colour
- There are some minor imperfections with slight paint cracks in some areas, only visible up close
- The bodywork has some minor rust spots, noted by the mechanic during the last maintenance; the rust is not penetrating and can be repaired
- The interior appears in smart condition for its age
- There is a tear in the stitching of the passenger seat at shoulder level
- The convertible top cover is somewhat worn
- The seller can provide information on where to purchase a new compatible top cover
- The plastic cover speaker on the left side near the back seat is broken in two places
- The car radio was working the last time it was turned on, we are told
- Both electric windows work, although they rise slowly (especially the left one)
- The onboard clock doesn't always work (likely a simple electrical fix)

The Mechanics
- 2.0-litre (1971cc) four-cylinder petrol engine
- Four-speed manual transmission
- The car starts readily, even after several weeks of non-use
- Some squeaking is noticeable due to the car's 52 years of age
- No issues emerged during the last inspection and the vendor comments that the car drives well
- The engine is responsive and reacts well even at low RPMs
- It provides a relaxed, vintage driving experience
- Fuel consumption is reasonable and it can be driven efficiently
- We're told that the steering is somewhat stiff due to a lack of power steering, but this isn't especially noticeable while driving
