The Background

With only 947 built between 72’ and 76’ and many being exported to the US, the 2500M is quite the special and quintessential British sports car. The ‘M’ series were renowned for their power, and road-holding ability and are a firm favourite among enthusiasts . 
A tubular chassis was the reason behind the sporty feel and this amazingly for the time came with a 5yr anti-corrosion warranty, proving the quality behind the build and weighing in at just over a tonne it was a formidable competitor at its time.

The History

Purchased in Wales from its previous owner in March 2005 it was driven several hundred miles to Scotland where it has spent the last 17 years. The owner decided on a long term full body-off strip down and subsequently rebuilt and treated where required.
The chassis was sandblasted and only needed one minor repair to an outrigger which, along with priming and painting, was carried out professionally.
The suspension, brakes and transmission were also rebuilt as necessary with new parts as required.
A professional upgraded re-wire, complete with electronic ignition, has been done in the vendors ownership, and this also included a multi connector for quick removal of the bonnet for servicing.
The vendor has spent a significant amount of his own time ensuring the car is up to standard, keeping it in a dry garage and evidently caring for the car to a high standard.

 

The Paperwork

The v5 is up to date, this shows 15 keepers.
We were happy to see a good folder of receipts kept for a good few years. This included one for the fresh paintwork, a brake master cylinder and servo and various other service items to keep the car very useable and reliable.

The Interior

The interior of this 2500m for the most part has gone un-touched in its near half century life. The dashboard, according to the vendor, has been changed along with improved switchgear to keep things a little more user friendly. 
For the most part the interior is in reasonable condition, no significant damage or tears, just day to day use and wear. We, though, didn't think it looked bad and gave an authentic and original feel and with a bit of elbow grease and t.l.c. could be improved significantly. 
Otherwise everything seemed to work, including an electric aerial . The steering wheel had been swapped out for a smaller sportier one and we were told the original would be included too. Willans harnesses fitted well into the sporty interior too and did not look out of place.

The Exterior

We were lucky enough to photograph this on a sunny day on the Scottish coast and we thought it looked incredible. The new paint had been finished really well and showed very little of the usual fibreglass texture. The finish was smooth and shiny with just the usual faint wash marks in the bright sun.
The wheels and underside of this example were in really good order, with the original TVR wheels shod in new TOYO Cf1 tyres. The shiny stainless steel twin pipe exhaust sounded fabulous. An aftermarket oil cooler occupies the space originally holding the spare wheel, and although not shown in the photos, the spare will be placed on the rear shelf.
A sunroof had been retrofitted also in the past. This had been done really well but we did notice some overspray on the seal, no big deal and no doubt a quick fix. 
Overall the exterior was superb, little to fault and of course no rust to worry about! 

The Mechanics

Mechanically the car seemed very solid. Upon inspection underneath, everything seemed dry and clean. The vendor told us there is a small clunk on setting off and suspects the rear differential may need an adjustment shim fitting, but we were assured it does not affect the driving of the vehicle whatsoever and can’t be heard at any other time. 
The 2500 started perfectly when we saw it, no smoke or other unusual sounds, only the perfect rasp from the exhaust exit! Set up for a firm ride currently, the front shock absorbers are adjustable and could be altered to suit.
Although exempt due to age, the car passed an MOT test last year with no advisories.
The sporty 6 cylinder Triumph engine, the overdrive gearbox, the complete re-wire, new suspension and  brakes leave this TVR in a good position to be used regularly and enjoyed.

The Appeal

TVR cars are world renowned for their looks and performance, and this is a perfect example. 
Sitting low to the ground with a torquey 2.5L in-line 6 cylinder mated to an overdrive gearbox, makes for the perfect weekend driver. That, combined with a good maintenance history and completely fresh paint will give the new owner many reasons to smile when enjoying the road ahead.

 And for the same price as a base model Dacia…We know which one we would choose!
