The Appeal
The Volkswagen 181, known as the "Thing" in the US market, is among the most distinctive vehicles to emerge from Wolfsburg. Originally developed as a light military vehicle for NATO forces, the 181 combined Beetle mechanicals with a utilitarian, open-top body that could be stripped down in minutes — removable doors, a fold-down windscreen, and a canvas soft top made it a uniquely versatile machine. Production ceased in 1975, and surviving examples in good order are increasingly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
This 1973 example retains its matching numbers 1,584 cc flat-four engine paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. It has been treated to new black vinyl seat upholstery and a new black soft top. Imported from the United States, it comes with a US title and Dutch import documentation, with all duties and VAT already paid.
