The Appeal

Everyone these days knows and loves the Volkswagen Type 2.

When it entered production in 1950 the simple no-nonsense work van was the backbone of the European post war economy transporting a lot of supplies around the continent.

It would also find fame later in life as a more political symbol with some iconic imagery of VW buses from the ‘hippy’ period of the 60s.

Fast forwarding to 1967 and VW introduce the Type 2 T2, a larger van, in general, it would stay in production until 1979, in Europe that is, in Brazil the T2 only ceased production in 2013, a testament to its design.

As the summer is well and truly upon us, this T2 Westfalia Campervan will be the perfect companion for any holiday.

Owned by the same loving family for the past 13 years it is now time for you to enjoy the thrills of classic motoring.

The History and Paperwork

  • Built in 1973 this T2 was a resident of sunny San Diego until it is bought over into the UK in 2009.
  • The current owner fell in love with it at the Vanfest event in 2009 and bought the van
  • Upon purchase, the interior was a little bit tired and had that smell that is only presented in older cars.
  • With the intention to use the van for their family it was vital that the interior was nice, new, and clean. So, a total overhaul of the interior was complete
  • The front seats are the original frames, but they have been filled with new foam and recovered in a lovely brown material.
  • Much like the front seats, the rear seat sections have also received some love
  • Most importantly the rear seats all have proper 3-point seatbelts making the interior very safe for all the passengers
  • For people who love originality, the dashboard, steering wheel, and roof section are all original to the van
  • At some point in the current ownership, some of the paint was renewed with a partial respray.
  • There is a little bit of paperwork present with this T2, it has all of its import papers, a photocopy of its old American title, and a lot of MOT certificates
  • The most recent, and largest invoice is one for a new engine that had to be fitted last year
  • The 2.0 CJ re-conditioned engine was fitted in February of 2021 and has been run properly by the current owner.
  • It is now time for you to get in and take this campervan wherever you please, with total privacy thanks to the handmade curtains, you can simply rock up and camp out in some of the most scenic places in the UK and Europe.

The Interior

  • Overhauled in 2009
  • Pop-up roof section
  • 3-point seat belts all round
With any campervan the interior is vital, it needs to provide a comfortable driving position whilst also not compromising on the sleeping comfortability.

You will be happy to hear that the interior of this T2 Westfalia is in great condition in all compartments.

If we start at the front, or the cab, we can see that it is fitted with two individual seats with a nice corridor between them into the living section. Both of these front seats are presented in very good condition, trimmed in a rather nice brown leather material with contrasting piping.

Looking up from the seats we are met with the original black plastic dashboard which was retained during the interior overhaul. There is one slight crack just behind the grab handle, but this shouldn’t be too worrying.

Finishing up with the interior with smaller elements like the carpets and wrap around curtains we can see that these too have been looked after properly by the current owners.

If we move towards the living compartment of this campervan you will not be surprised to hear that it too has been looked after properly and is presented for sale in wonderful condition.

With an integrated twin burner and sink section, this is a proper go anywhere camper. A pivotal feature of the living compartment is the pop-up roof section, with this original feature extended it allows you to stand up and cook dinner or do the washing up without having to be bent double, just adding to the comfort of this camper.

Another important feature for modern day camper is 240v power to charge up phones or laptops, luckily this T2 has a leisure battery setup with 4 plugs in the interior to plug into. Also, should you be camping at a site with an electrical hook-up you will be able to plug it in with the external hook-up point.

Within this rear compartment, there is also three more spaces for passengers, all have proper seat belts they are both safe and comfortable. The rear bench folds out, within seconds, into a ¾ size ‘rock and roll’ bed.

This T2 has a perfect interior that you will enjoy spending time in.

The current owners have looked after this interior well over their ownership and it is now time for the baton to pass on to you to take care of as you explore some beautiful places.

The Exterior

  • Presented in beautiful condition
  • Some paintwork has been carried out
  • External electrical hook-up
Some vehicles captivate a culture, and the VW Type 2 campervan is probably one of the most famous vehicles around.

When you look it feels as if it is smiling back at you, with its big lights and pronounced front bumper it certainly has character in buckets. The exterior of this T2 is presented very well, with only a few small areas of paint bubbling towards the rear deck but the rest of the body panels are presented in great condition, this could be because the current owners have stored it under its own cover.

All four of the wheels are adorned with incredibly shiny hubcaps, embossed with the original Wolfsburg badge. You will also find a brand new full size spare tyre in the rear section of the living quarters.

Whether you are in the driving mode with the pop-up roof section in the down position or the camping mode with the roof popped up and the side door opened it looks amazing and will always turn a few heads wherever you go.

This is one of those cars that you can’t help but look at when you park it up, this will look excellent on your driveway, or on a campsite.

Wherever you take this camper it will look amazing and provide you with some amazing memories in the years to come.

The Mechanics

  • Recondition engine recently fitted
  • Lovely running condition
  • Ready for you to get in and take it anywhere
Originally based on the same rear engined, rear wheel drive setup of the legendary VW Beetle.

This bus has been recently fitted with a recondition 2.0l CJ engine and was carefully run in properly by the current owners, meaning that it is now ready for you to hop in and take her on the next adventure.

Mechanically this T2 is in good condition. She had not been started for a little bit before the photoshoot but after a small amount of cranking she fired into life nicely and drove up the drive into position without any complaining whatsoever.

With its new engine, it is more than ready for you to jump in and take it away on your first trip

Summary

This car has really been a gem for the current owners, creating many happy memories for them as they took it touring.

It is now your chance to experience the pure fun of classic car ownership and the joys of go anywhere camping.

With the great interior condition, new engine, and well-presented exterior this will be a great proposition for you.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
