The Appeal
The enduring popularity of the R107 roadster tends to overshadow the appeal of the excellent C107 SLC coupe. Long, low and with useful four seat layout, it has all the qualities of the convertible but with added rarity and practicality. They are arguably amongst the best GTs of their era.
This 1974 SLC is fitted with the powerful 4.5L M117 225bhp V8 engine and is an original UK-market RHD car. The odometer shows less than 75,500 miles from new - while we can’t verify this, the car’s history and the fact this is a six digit odometer, indicate it could be correct.
We are told that the car was acquired by the seller in 2017 as a ‘barn find.’ In 2018 he arranged its restoration, including a full repaint in gold, using a similar but not exact shade to the car’s original paintwork. The car has been little used since, but has suffered some deterioration due to age. This include the sills, wings and boot and the interior, which appears to be original and would benefit from a makeover. The vendor says that the car is mechanically sound and starts and runs well.
For the right enthusiast, this is an interesting project and a chance to restore an increasingly rare variant of the popular 107 series range.
The vendor says:
“Overall, the car is in very good condition. The bodywork and paint gleam beautifully in the sunlight, aside from some minor bubbling on the wings and boot lid, with the wings being the more noticeable areas. Once warmed up and on the road, it drives exceptionally well. The 450 engine is powerful and effortless, providing a smooth and enjoyable driving experience. Although attention is needed underneath, this car represents an excellent project for an enthusiast looking for a solid 1974 450SLC, as opposed to later models. With some care to address seals and minor rust, it could be restored to its former glory. This is a beautiful example and would make a very rewarding project car for someone prepared to invest time in it.”
