The Appeal
For almost twenty years, the MG Midget captivated buyers around the world with its lightweight construction, simplistic design and vibrant road manners. It was more affordable than other sports cars of the age, and more engaging as well. In many respects, that remains true today, with a well-preserved Midget offering time-capsule motoring, and early models packing plenty of charm into their diminutive two-seater cabins.
This is an early example of a Mark II Midget, benefiting from newly introduced features like external door handles and pivoting quarterlight windows. The boot-mounted chrome-and-timber luggage rack is a nod to the Midget’s 1960s origins, while the alluring British Racing Green paint has been fully resprayed to eliminate rust.
Wear is minimal across this car’s exterior, while the interior bears some age-appropriate patina but is in very good order throughout. The seats have been fully refurbished, and the wooden steering wheel is new, while many of the other fixtures appear to be original. The roof is in good condition and fits snugly, while the chromework is impressively presented from the exterior headlamp surrounds and wing mirrors to the cabin’s door handles and handbrake lever.
On the road, this Midget is described by its current owner as being “a great car with an abundance of character and personality”, which “drives like a dream”. There is plenty of feedback from the steering and replacement engine, although the next owner will need to reconnect the light switch for the dials to the main electrics.
