The Appeal
Sixten Sason’s original 92 channeled aircraft-infused aerodynamics with a simple, rugged design that could cope with Sweden’s weather and be easily serviced by mechanics in the country’s remote regions. The subsequent 93 and 96 evolved rather than changed that clever philosophy.
For modern enthusiasts the 96 is one of the most characterful and usable of classics. This eye-catching Verona Green ‘74 V4 was acquired in 2024 by the current keeper, a former Veloce Publishing director, as a project for improvement. All recent work has been done by the workshop at the Haynes Motor Museum. The paintwork may well be be largely original, so shows some light discolouration, but we are told the car seems to have no rust across panels or underside. Inside there is a wonderful dark green fabric interior that is very well preserved.

“Since selling the automotive book publishing company, Veloce Publishing, a couple of years ago, the vendor's 'retirement' hobby has been finding cars with very good bones and taking them up to a level beyond excellent. This SAAB is one such car. Now fully detailed, this car presents beautifully and also has the benefit of a brand new alternator and overhauled ignition system.
“SAAB's engineering genius is evident in so many aspects of the 96: the way the windows swivel down, the reverse gear lock which needs to be activated before the ignition key can be removed, the back seat which folds flat to give an estate car-like loadspace (and for which a bed kit was available), the aerodynamic body and undertray … The 96 is a car for the individual who wants something a little different from the run of the mill and this well-loved survivor might just be the best in the UK, as well as being a hoot to drive.”
