The Appeal
If you're after a classic camper, the Volkswagen T2 Kombi is a must-have. While many have only ever done occasional trips to the coast, this 1974 example has seen some proper adventures. The current owner bought it in 2021 and, after a restoration, took it on a two-and-a-half-year journey across Latin America.
It is now back in France and offered for sale following several mechanical works, including the piston rings redone in 2024, the fitting of electronic ignition and the replacement of several components between 2025 and 2026. It presents well thanks to its 2021 restoration, which according to the vendor included a full repaint in its current mint green and white livery, engine work and a refurbishment of the cabin.
The original interior fit-out is by Alzaga, a Mexican specialist in camper conversions and a rival to Westfalia. The van features a pop-top roof, a fold-down bed, an electrical system partly powered by a solar panel and plenty of storage.
The vendor reports that the engine runs regularly and that the Kombi starts easily. With its practical layout and compact dimensions, this T2 has already proven itself on a long trek across a continent.
The vendor says:
« The van drives very well. The engine runs smoothly, hits 85 km/h no worries and pulls the hills. Of course, it's still a 1974 camper, with squeaky shock absorbers, a slight petrol smell and a bit of backfiring from the exhaust on the downhills!
We've always dreamed of travelling in a T2 camper. The first thing that hits you is obviously its unique look! The round headlights, the big VW badge and the two-tone paint give it an instantly cool vibe. I particularly love the chrome hubcaps and the sound of this legendary engine, a rear-mounted air-cooled flat-four. The layout is brilliantly optimised and the compact size means it can go anywhere. »
