Driver’s cars come in all shapes and sizes and some would argue this era was the pinnacle of form and function with stunning Bertone styling, rear wheel drive and a perky twin cam engine. This example has a large array of paperwork to support the restoration work, and it has to be said, looks absolutely stunning. Unusually different in Blu Olandese ( 343 ) is period correct and in superb condition. A very comprehensive restoration with modern touches.
History and paperwork
Vast amounts of paperwork to support the history of the car since the entry into the UK come with this vehicle, with documentation for virtually every part bought and fitted with costs and supplier details. Costly, yet vital work such as the timing chain and carburettors have of course been attended to giving great peace of mind and future-proofing the vehicle.
All the paperwork is neatly kept in a bound folder for safe keeping and accompanied with an array of manuals and guides to keep the car in top order. This car was previously registered overseas in South Africa, this has had two prior owners since being in the UK in 2020.
The car was originally a Junior 1600, but during the restoration process has been given an early 1750 GTV interior and drivetrain.
The Interior
Some minor modern upgrades
Stunning condition
Fully restored but retaining an original look
Beautifully finished with exceptional workmanship throughout, this interior is a wonderful place to be with attention to detail everywhere you look. The vinyl sports seats have been done beautifully and the covers fit perfectly with no evidence of wear or damage. Same goes for the vinyl covering for the transmission tunnel covering, really well fitted and in perfect order.
The carpets, like the seats are a rich and dark black, plush too with a weatherproof mat to protect the drivers footwell. The wooden trim too is also exceptional, these from what we could see have been replaced and all fitted perfectly looking right at home in the airy cabin. The inside has some modern touches too, with a digital voltage readout which is subtle but functional and two, glove box mounted, USB charging ports as well as a normal 12V power outlet for those longer journeys.
Finally in the boot, the original steel spare wheel resides neatly in its place, surrounded in a good layer of nicely applied back paint, everything being clean and tidy along with the fresh boot lining
The Exterior
Superb shine
Beautiful brightwork
Pepper pot wheels
Hard to ignore, this car looks good anywhere and this is testament to the time and effort that has gone into preserving it. The little details like the Bertone badge on the lower front wings, the cloverleaf badge on the rear quarters and those absolutely fabulous wheels really add to the flavour of this unmistakably Italian car. All around the panels look nice and straight with a very nice, even finish.
All the brightwork is top notch having been fitted really well and has a good deep shine. Of course there a few isolated marks and abrasions as from what we could tell most of the trims were original, but ultimately very hard to fault given its age.
We absolutely loved the little Alfa emblem embossed on the back of the mirrors, a real attention to detail that Alfa is so well known for and makes such a difference. Overall the paintwork was hard to fault, a couple if very small blemishes in the surface of the paint that have been shown in the images, but an absolute joy to behold nonetheless.
The Mechanics
1750cc engine
Fabulous looking engine bay
Solid underside
Substantial collection of spare/replacement parts
Underneath is as you might expect, given the rest of the car...very good indeed! We didn’t seen any evidence of welding work and this is no surprise coming from a dryer environment but of course this can’t be guaranteed on an older vehicle. The underside had been attended too with underseal which to have been applied sparingly. Engine, differential and gearbox all look relatively leak free, a pleasant surprise for an older vehicle indeed. The Vendor informs us of a small leak from the steering box that is suspected to be a worn seal.
The original Junior 1600cc engine has been replaced with an early 1750cc (as would have been present in a period GTV). Likewise, the entire exhaust system has been replaced and is finished with the classic ‘slash cut’ tail pipe, neatly fitted and looks like a factory finish. Throughout the underside all the components look well attended to and all sorted giving little reason to think there will be much need for immediate work. A handful of spare suspension components, headlamps, door seals and gaskets also come with the car.
Under the bonnet, things look immaculate and like a factory finish with the lovely blue paintwork carrying on into the engine bay. The fabulous sounding twin cam engine sits neat and clean adorned with a satin aluminium finish valve cover and red spark plug leads, giving a sporty appearance. The benefits from a new battery and various other components too vast to list.
Summary
Owning an Alfa Romeo is something on every car enthusiasts bucket list, and we think this example would be right up there with the best. With a very comprehensive restoration, supported with excellent workmanship throughout, this GTV recreation makes for a simply wonderful car not just to look at but to drive too.
