Highlights
- Rare RHD version of the targa cabriolet
- A nearly-finished restoration project
- Full respray and top end engine rebuild
The Appeal
Here we have a very attractive opportunity to acquire a rare Baur ‘Cabriolet’ BMW 2002, the Targa top version.
This car is offered for sale as a nearly complete project, which has undergone major work already and now just needs some light finishing off.
This 2002 has received a full bare metal respray in Baikal Blue, a top end engine rebuild and a freshly re-trimmed interior. There are numerous jobs to be finished, but once complete this car will certainly be a thing of beauty.
The History and Paperwork
- Rare RHD Baur ‘Cabriolet’
- Bare metal respray in 2021
- Professionally stored for past year
- MoT and Road Tax exempt
The Interior
- Re-Trimmed interior
- BMW Houndstooth wool trim
The 2002’s crisp styling has ensured that it still looks good more than 65 years after the model was introduced. This is particularly true of the interior, which is refined and unfussy. The half vinyl seats are trimmed in houndstooth wool, which gives the car a feeling of retro chic.
The dashboard uses a tastefully restrained amount of veneer, with three large cutouts for gauges mounted ahead of the driver. And the thin-rimmed steering wheel gives the car a refined fell as you drive.
We are informed by the vendor that some elements of the interior will require correct fitting.
The Exterior
- Bare metal respray in 2021
- New mohair hood
- Wheels refurbished
Karosserie Baur was a firm enlisted by BMW to design a cabriolet version of their 2002 saloon. And what a fantastic job they did. This late convertible retains all the best aspects from the saloon and adds a stylishly understated Targa roof.
The car has received new sills, door skins and spare wheel well, and then a full bare metal respray in period correct Baikal Blue. This is said to remain in excellent condition, other than one or two minor storage scuffs. Unfortunately, the lower left corner of the windscreen has a small crack.
Underneath, the car has been undersealed to give lasting protection. The wheels have been refurbished and the tyres are said to retain good tread. Windscreen surround is present but will need to be fitted correctly.
The Mechanics
- Top end engine rebuild
- New brake and fuel lines
- New suspension components
The vendor informs us that this car’s engine has received a top end rebuild, but it has not been run in over a year. A few items will need to be finished off to get the car to a roadworthy state.
The Vendor has provided a list of known work that will need to be done:
- Throttle linkage
- Steering idler arm
- Front suspension bushes
- Fuel tank repair
- Engine needs setting up and running in
- Some interior elements need correctly fitting
- Rubber fuel filler neck in boot requires replacing
- New rear parcel shelf
We are also told that the suspension has been renewed and that the brake and fuel lines have been replaced.
In all, this BMW appears to have benefitted from a mechanical overhaul of some components, but will allow its next owner the opportunity for some tinkering in order to make sure that everything is as good as it can be.
SUMMARY
This BMW 2002 is offered for sale as a project where most of the hard work has been completed. It has already received the requisite welding work and a full respray, so it represents a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiast to finish the restoration to their satisfaction.
Once complete and roadworthy, this will be a lovely example of a great looking car. And the rarity of the RHD Baur cars means that you won’t often drive past another on the road.
