The Appeal
Dropping the Buick V8 into the BGT finally delivered the mini-E Type it had always promised to be. 50% more powerful and yet considerably lighter than the 1.8L standard 4cyl unit, it delivered a quicker and nimbler sports car.
Just 2,591 left the works before MG inexplicably pulled the plug in summer 1976 This car was first registered in September ‘75 and a MG V8 Register certificate confirms that it is a genuine factory V8. Resprayed in its original stand-out Blaze Orange, it is a great example that retains its period features, including factory alloys and a large Webasto-style folding sunroof.
The extensive history file records over £20,000 of work. Highlights include a carburettor overhaul, body restoration and respray, stainless steel exhaust, polybushing and a Hi-Torque starter motor.
The car is tidy, usable and very presentable. Due to its age, there is inevitably scope to improve if the buyer wishes. But with that revered V8 perhaps the first thing you’ll want to do is jump in and drive.
