The Appeal
Few cars capture the spirit of 1970s motoring like the Porsche 911, and the Targa remains one of the most distinctive variants. Introduced in the late 1960s, it offered open-air driving with extra rigidity, soon becoming an icon of the decade. By 1975, the 911 featured the larger 2.7-litre flat-six engine, celebrated for its free-revving character and unmistakable soundtrack. For many enthusiasts, the 1975 Targa strikes the balance between classic design and usable performance, topped off with its removable roof panel.
This particular example was imported from California in 2020 after being purchased from Beverly Hills Car Club by the current keeper. Left-hand drive and Tax & MOT exempt, it delivers a true 1970s driving experience. Though very much a project, it retains desirable features such as its black leather interior, period OEM Toshiba stereo, and recovered Targa top. Recent mechanical work is said to include a new fuel tank, injectors, pump, and brake lines, plus UK-spec lighting, giving a solid base for further recommissioning.
Not a finished car by any means, but for an enthusiast seeking originality and a rewarding project, this 911 Targa holds strong appeal. With its iconic silhouette and open-roof character, it offers the chance to revive one of Porsche’s most recognisable sports cars.
The History & Paperwork
- First registered in January 1975
- Non-matching numbers: 1977 engine fitted
- Current keeper purchased the Targa from Beverly Hills Car Club in Dec 2019
- Imported from California and arrived in the UK in February 2020
- First registered with DVLA in March 2020
- The copy of the California certificate of title shows the owner from 1992 - this copy is with the shipping paperwork.
- Current indicated mileage of 93,081 miles
- V5C in existing keeper’s name
- The vendor reports there is no service history other than for the work done since 2020.

The Condition
- This Targa is generally very original
- The car has been keyed on most panels
- The car is thought to have been re sprayed at some point in its life, with its original colour reported as being Silver.
- The vendor notes “there are some small rust spots but no significant rust on the vehicle.”
- There is some rust underneath the bonnet seal. The seal is off the car so this is easily visible and would require minor repair. There was also a small area of rust near the battery.
- The wheels have been chromed, however some of the chrome is visibly flaking.
- The tyres have thread but show cracking and will need to be replaced.
- The Targa top was recovered in June 2020

- Rear dashboard is cracked in multiple areas
- The driver's seat is split along one side and there's a hole in the base cushion that will need to be repaired.
- There is a speaker box in the rear parcel shelf which shows signs of sun damage.
- Most of the switches throughout the car are reported as working, however the dashboard lights are permanently on.
- The current keeper advises an air con system was fitted but is currently out of the vehicle, this was likely fitted in period by the supplying dealer
The Mechanics

- Work said to have been completed since 2020 includes: converted all lights to UK spec (original lights are retained). Rear bumper overriders converted to European spec. New fuel tank fitted and all fuel lines to fuel filter in engine bay replaced including tunnel lines. The fuel pump has been replaced and new fuel injectors fitted. All brake line flexi hoses have been replaced and fluid refreshed.
- The seller also notes a recent oil change prior to starting the vehicle.
- There are signs of small oil leaks underneath the engine
- The gearbox output shaft seals are worn and oil is leaking from there.
- The vendor describes the engine as “starting ok with a small stutter which is thought to be down to old fuel residue in the warm up regulator”
