The Appeal

Alfa Romeo is a brand famous for producing sporty little saloons, which combine the advantages of lightweight, compact design with powerful, well designed engines. The Giulia was introduced in 1962 and production continued until 1978, making this a late example of the model.
The Giulia Nuova Super 1300 offered for sale here is a great example of a car which remains largely in original condition, not having been over restored or upgraded. It is nice to be able to experience a car as it was when it was new.
The vendor states that the bodywork, paint and engine are original and untouched, other than routine repairs. So if you’re looking for an honest example of this fun little ‘70s saloon, then you need look no further.

The History and Paperwork

  • Original Italian documents provided
  • Certificate from the ‘Automotoclub Storico Italiano’
  • Appears to be in very original condition
  • First registered in August 1976

The Interior

  • Beautifully original interior
  • Some wear to seat
  • Stylishly designed dashboard
According to the seller, this Alfa Romeo’s interior has been left in original condition. We're thankful to the car’s owners throughout its history for this, because it allows us to see just how the car was when it left the factory in 1976.
Although the driver’s seat is now a little torn and the rear seat has suffered some sun damage, these imperfections just show that the car has been used throughout its life and that its originality has been respected.
Upon sinking into the comfortable, cloth lined driver’s seat, we are immediately presented with the stylish veneered dashboard, with its bold yet understated Giulia badge to the right and the large instrument cluster in front of the driver.
The only reported issue is that the clock is no longer working. And to the rear, the boot retains its original jack and spare wheel

The Exterior

  • Original paintwork
  • Factory underseal still present
  • Sleek ‘three box saloon’ styling
Our overall impression of this car is that it has benefitted from a life spent in Italy’s dry climate, with only a few repairs to the bodywork having been carried out. The paintwork is said to be original and appears to be in sound condition, although it has become slightly dulled over the years and is now showing some light crazing and a few chips.
The glass and the chrome trim appear bright and the light lenses are in good condition. This Alfa sits on steel wheels, which are showing signs of bubbling beneath the paint and the car could benefit from new tyres.
Underneath, the vendor reports that the original underseal remains intact. Only one repair is reported to have been carried out, above the right rear fender.

The Mechanics

  • Original engine, reportedly never rebuilt
  • New rear springs
  • Clutch replaced
The 1,290cc twin-cam engine in this Alfa produced 85 PS when new and was capable of propelling the car to a top speed of 165Kph. This lightweight alloy engine clearly produces ample performance for a car that weighs less than 1,100kg.
This engine is said to be the original unit, which hasn’t been restored. The vendor reports that the car has been treated to a new clutch and 55 amp alternator, and that there are a few oil drips, which is to be expected from an unrestored car of nearly 50 years old.
The suspension benefits from new rear coil springs and the exhaust has reportedly received a new centre silencer and tailpipe, which appear to remain in good condition.

Summary

There’s always something alluring about a car which hasn’t been restored. It’s wonderful to see and feel it exactly as it was designed and built. So this Alfa Romeo offers a great opportunity to acquire a Giulia Nuova Super which hasn’t been changed from its original specification.
Its next owner will have to make a decision as to whether to continue the car’s preservation in a state of originality, or to embark on a restoration project to make it shine again.
Either way, it’s a great little sporty saloon and a fun runabout.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
€0 to €9,999 €100.00
€10,000 to €49,999 €250.00
€50,000 to €99,999 €500.00
€100,000 + €1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
