The Appeal

The BMW ‘slash 6’ bikes were built from 1974 to 1976, and came with larger engines than the previous ‘Slash 5’ models. The R90/6 fitted with an 898cc air-cooled boxer engine and was upgraded to a front disk brake. Now with 60hp, it could easily break the magic 100MPH barrier and carry on to 115MPH, vital in taking on the new wave of Japanese performance bikes and to take on the American market.

Almost 50 years later it is still a great looking machine, in this case painted metallic blue, it has been well kept and remains in beautiful condition and running order.

The History and Paperwork

  • Current owner since 1996
  • All work recorded over the years
  • Always garaged and off the road from 2004
  • Mechanical overhaul while garage stored
The current owner bought this BMW in 1996 and over the next 10 years rode around 1000 miles a year as a weekend bike, putting 10,000 miles on the clock until a newer bike came along and the R90 was left in the garage on a bike lift.

While in use the BMW was kept very well maintained and the owner kept a detailed log of every job from buying a new key to service and tyres, so we know it had its tyres and spark plugs changed, all of its fluids kept topped up and everything else up to 2004.

Since then, while stored on the lift, it has had a mechanical overhaul, stripping the engine and replacing many consumables.
The owner has now given up riding so is selling his motorcycles, but after recently taking the bike outside for the first time in years it started and rode well on a private road.

The Interior

  • Excellent seat
  • Twist grips have been replaced
  • Clear instruments
On top, the double seat is in superb condition, the black vinyl covering is not worn and has no splits or tears and the padding has held its shape.

At the front, the handlebar and right hand grip are new with a new throttle mechanism. The labeling on the controls is clear and not worn thin.

The dials are clear, there are some marks on the glass and a bit of dirt in the corners of the simple dash panel but the condition is very good indeed.

The Exterior

  • Beautiful metallic blue paint
  • Tyres are unused
  • New mirrors
The bike was used regularly for weekend rides and meets and has a few marks around the painted areas, some stone chips on the side panels and mudguards, as well as the tank which has some paint worn off at the front and rear. On the underside of the seat the black paint has flaked off and some surface rust is showing in patches, easily treated at this point. The vendor noted that the centre stand lowering foot peg has broken off and needs welding back which should be a simple repair.

The rubber grips and BMW badges on the tank are in excellent condition , the stainless steel exhausts look great and the mirrors have been changed for new ones.

It had new tyres fitted while in storage, and these have only just touched the ground.

The Mechanics

  • Engine overhauled
  • Tank seals renewed
  • New brake lines
  • New battery
Having been stored on a lift in the garage for the last 18 years had given easy access to overhaul the BMW.

The cylinder heads, barrels and pistons have been off for de-coking, valves re-seated and all new gaskets and pushrod tube seals used. The front brake hard lines have been replaced with cupro nickel pipe and the flexi hose with braided versions. The fuel tank valve seals were renewed and carburettor diaphragms replaced.

It has had a new battery and full service including oil and filters, points with spark plug caps, and the oil changed in the telescopic forks.
It comes with a number of spares and a service book.

Summary

This is a very well maintained bike, which having been kept garaged for so long is in lovely condition, has been overhauled and serviced and is ready and waiting to be ridden and enjoyed.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
