The Appeal
Ever since the British Armed Forces began using Land Rovers in May 1949, the Ministry of Defence has often requested Land Rover design vehicles catered to their specific needs. One of these vehicles was the air-portable Lightweight, designed to be carried by a Westland Wessex helicopter. Here we have another of these special MOD requests: a 101 Forward Control.
Land Rover developed the Forward Control in response to the Armed Forces needing an air-portable gun tractor capable of towing the L118 Light Gun while carrying one ton of ammunition and a six-man crew.
Land Rover developed the Forward Control in response to the Armed Forces needing an air-portable gun tractor capable of towing the L118 Light Gun while carrying one ton of ammunition and a six-man crew.
This 1976 Land Rover 101 GS has recently benefited from a comprehensive rebuild completed in 2024, making it a particularly appealing example. With a fresh respray that includes the chassis and underbody, this 101 presents very well throughout. The addition of a Fairey overdrive enhances its on-road usability, making this military-derived vehicle more practical for its civilian role.
