The Appeal

A truly modern classic in every sense, the 911 Porsche first arrived on the scene in 1964. Just two years later in 1966, Porsche brought out a convertible in the shape of the ‘Targa’, named in honour of Porsche’s many victories in the historic Sicilian Targa Florio race.

Anticipated new US safety rules, prompted a different approach to the soft-top 911, with the Targa sporting a hefty roll bar to protect its occupants in the event an incident, together with a removable roof which was easily stowed onboard.
This 911 Targa from 1976, just oozes class and sophistication from every angle. Power is delivered from Porsche’s signature 2.7 litre flat-six and transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed manual gearbox, just the sporting set up that enthusiasts crave for.

The Whale Tail spoiler, alloy Porsche wheels, three spoke steering wheel and rev counter directly in line of sight for the driver all shout out that this is one very focused, sports car.

The vendor has many happy memories of both European and UK trips in this Porsche and tells us that it’s always been extremely reliable, without any major issues throughout his custodianship.

The Interior

  • Appears very original
  • Electric windows
  • Dog Tooth pattern cloth upholstery
  • Sony CD/ Radio
The interior of this 911 does appear to be very original.

From its cloth and leather seats in the classic ‘Dog Tooth’ pattern, to its well-appointed and functional dash, it's classic Porsche by the bucket load. It does show a few signs of use, such as the driver’s seat bolster, the odd stains to seat bases and door pockets which both need a little attention but generally, its in pretty good condition considering this Porsche has been around for 46 years.

The Tara roof too needs a little attention as the inside is slightly sagging and the outside just needs a little re-finishing. Black carpets complement the rest of the interior and are in good condition throughout.

We’re informed by the vendor that all dials, switches & lights work correctly without issues, apart from the heated rear screen.

Overall, it's a functional, comfortable interior , which would benefit from a little careful detailing.

The Exterior

  • 29,277 miles indicated
  • ‘Whale Tail’ rear spoiler
  • Black finished Porsche alloy wheels with silver rims
  • Porsche branded rear reflector
  • Targa roof
Overall, this 911 Targa presents very well and hasn’t required any remedial work under current ownership.

Underneath, the car has been treated with Waxoyl twice since the vendor purchased it and is described as in good condition.

There is a little paint crazing on the top of the nearside wing, with a little paint bubbling to the bottom of the driver’s side door and rear wing. We believe some respraying has taken place in previous ownership to the lower sections of the car, with a little overspray on the black sill trims & possibly to the roll bar at some time.

There are one or two small knocks to the body, dents which have occurred whilst in the garage over the last couple of years.

The Targa top was re-covered by specialists in 2008, and may require re-examining along with the rubber seal. Throughout its time with the vendor, it has reportedly been dry stored when not in use.

The Mechanics

  • Regularly serviced by a local garage
  • New timing chains and oil feed tensioners in 2010
  • Mechanically quiet
The wonderful sound emanating from a Porsche flat six engine never fails to put a smile on any enthusiasts face and this one isn’t an exception to that rule.

Starting easily and without even a whisp of smoke from the exhaust , this 911 sounded crisp and rasping. It was driven to the photoshoot and the vendor reported that despite not being driven regularly recently, it ran beautifully once warmed up.

Certainly, when being moved around for our photographer, all appeared to be running very well without any signs to suggest otherwise.

This 911 has been regularly serviced by a local garage , with timing chains and tensioners being replaced under current ownership. Nothing apart from normal servicing has been needed over the past years, with only a split plastic airbox causing a small issue, a replacement eventually sourced in the US.

Summary

This classic Porsche 911 Targa is certainly a fine example of German engineering, combining style , power and handling to create an all-encompassing driving experience.

This 911 offers the chance to own one of these iconic cars without breaking the bank. Buy it and what you’ll have is a very usable classic, ready to go after a good service, drive and enjoy.

Then, maybe a few years down the line, it might be time for a little detailing, either way, it’ll be a fabulous car to own and most importantly take out of the garage and drive.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
