1976 Rolls Royce Shadow I Long Wheelbase

Highlights

• Rare long wheelbase non-partition model
• Mechanically sound
• Fantastic condition

The Background

The Silver Shadow I LWB was a rare model with only 2776 produced. The Silver Shadow II featured a lot of changes over previous models, featuring the 189hp 6.75L V8 coupled to a General Motors-sourced Turbo Hydramatic 400 automatic gearbox and hydraulic self levelling high-pressure hydropneumatic suspension system licensed from Citroën, with dual-circuit braking.

The front hydraulic suspension was deleted in 1969 as Rolls Royce determined that the rear did almost all of the work. As such this new setup achieved fantastic ride quality. This specification was priced at £22,979 when new.

The History

Originally purchased in derby, the car was exported to Spain, then owned by an unknown member of the government before being sold to a luxury car dealer. The current keeper purchased the car from this dealer in 2003 and continued to use the car in Spain until 2008 when they returned to the UK and imported the car back to the UK. upon its return it was given a very good fresh paint respray and the car has barely been used since.

The car is extremely low milage, and only had 11000 miles on the clock when the current owner purchased it in Spain, this mileage cannot be confirmed however this milage is not unlikely considering it’s history. The current owner put another 2,000 miles on the clock and spared no expense in its careful maintenance.

The Paperwork

V5 Present, and an incredible amount of history, a complete set of 5 workshop manuals purchased from Rolls Royce, the original owners handbook which is lovely, lots of original bulletins from the enthusiasts club, and much much more.

Please see the images for more! Also please note the V5 shows no previous keepers as it was imported back to the UK by its current owner and re-registered on entry.

The Interior

This is a very special car in that it is the rare long wheelbase model, but without the centre partition, as such it is not a limousine specification. This gives the rear seat passengers incredible leg room and really makes this car a pleasure to ride in, whilst still being able to socialise with the front seat occupants unobstructed by the partition.

The interior is a wonderful place to be with the warm and inviting tan leather upholstery (code VM846) with the classic burled walnut trim nicely contrasted against the black dashboard, steering wheel and instrumentation. It is in overall very nice condition, however does show the signs of wear you would expect from a car of this age, certainly a professional valet and leather treatment would perfect this wonderful interior.

Everything works, not a penny has been spared in keeping this car in perfect working order and all is as it should be.

The Exterior

Treated to a very good respray in Original Walnut Brown (code 9510261) in 2008, this car is very striking, certainly not a colour that would be popular on a modern vehicle but it fits the marque perfectly and really suits the car, contrasting perfectly against the chrome trims and black vinyl roof.

There is a couple of defects that show on close inspection, notably under the drivers window trim a few rust bubbles are starting to appear under the paint, so those could do with seeing to, and on the boot lid there appears to have been a scratch to the preparation surface prior to respray that can be seen on inspection. Overall however, a stunning car.

Also worth noting is that the car comes with a model specific car cover to help keep this car in perfect condition when not in use.

The Mechanics

The car is mechanically very sound and everything works well including the hydraulic rear suspension. It comes with lots of spare parts, including the parts required to fix a small issue it currently has with a sticky brake fluid reservoir floats that are incorrectly illuminating the brake fluid level low light on the dash.

A simple fix, but not one the current owner found time to do. Another point to note there is a very small radiator leak that could do with some attention. Overall a very sound car, with only a couple of very minor issues that can easily be fixed.

The Appeal

A wonderful and very well-kept classic, this rare model is one of only 2776 ever made to this specification, and one of extremely few remaining.

Certainly a very collectable car with lots of history and in great condition.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
