THE APPEAL

When it came to replacing the elegant but aged Michelotti-styled TR5 ready for a new decade, Triumph took a cost-effective approach.

The 1969-on TR6 was essentially a neat, contemporary facelift of the previous model, performed by German coachbuilder Karmann, which added the German firm’s chopped-off ‘Kamm’ tail and a new squarer front end, along new, flatter panels.

It was largely the same as the TR5 underneath, with a separate chassis and a front-mounted fuel-injected straight-six sending power to the rear wheels through a four-speed gearbox. It managed to look more butch, too, with a more imposing face and wider 5.5-inch wheels.

This one is an original UK-spec RHD car with 150bhp, making it the most desirable of the breed.

Plus, it’s the best colour – Magenta. Could a car look any more like a product of the 1970s?

THE INTERIOR

 • Retrimmed in black and grey cloth
 • Wooden dash
 • Full-length tonneau cover
 • Leather-rimmed three-spoke sports wheel
 • Pair of spare front seats in the original black vinyl, though the squabs will need replacing
Inside, the TR6 is pretty smart with front seats retrimmed in black and grey cloth and an aftermarket rollover hoop – a sensible concession to road safety.

The carpets, door trims and dash are very good and there is no radio. When you hear the exhaust, you’ll know why.

THE EXTERIOR

 • Recent bare metal respray
 • Excellent paint finish
 • Quality Hankook tyres with good tread
 • Very good soft top
The TR6 looks fantastic, having very recently been the subject of a complete bare metal respray.

The vendor bought the car in very straight and solid condition as it had been restored previously, but the paint was flat so he decided to bite the bullet and have it redone.

There are photos available of the car being painted so any buyer can see that it was solid to begin with and is hiding no nasties, while on the underside you can also see it’s a very solid and honest example.

As well as the body being truly immaculate, the TR6 has a black vinyl soft top that is free of any rips, tears or damage.

THE MECHANICS

 • 2.5 PI 150bhp
 • Just serviced with new plugs
 • Drives brilliantly
 • Overdrive on third and fourth gear
 • Box of service spares
The 150bhp 2.5 fuel-injected engine fires up on the button and runs beautifully, having just had a full service, new oil and air filters and new plugs along with a recent new brake master cylinder.

The transmission is in good order and engages all gears smoothly, including the factory overdrive.

A short test drive on country lanes around the seller’s home confirmed that it is in good working order throughout and is an absolute joy to drive, holding good oil pressure and a steady temperature.

Then there’s the aftermarket sports exhaust system – it sounds absolutely wonderful, with a throaty burble at idle and a real bark at higher revs.

SUMMARY

If you want a brawny classic sports car that’s in tip-top condition, is ready to show and needs nothing, then here it is.

The TR6 looks terrific, drives brilliantly and sounds amazing – and it’s an awesome colour to boot!

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
