The Appeal
The Land Rover 101 Forward Control was developed specifically for the British Army in the 1970s, designed to fulfil demanding military roles including towing the Rapier missile system. The ambulance variant is among the most sought-after of the 101 family, prized for its spacious body and distinctive military presence. In civilian life, they make excellent overland campers or business opportunities for food/beverage vending. With only around 2,500 examples of the 101 produced in total, they remain rare and highly collectable machines.
This example carries genuine military provenance, having been originally supplied to the Central Army Vehicle Depot at Hilton under army registration 71 GJ 60. It came from a long-term owner who used it mainly for shows and military battle re-enactments. The vendor describes the bodywork as very straight and original, while the interior is said to be in very good order for its age.
Powered by the 3.5-litre Rover V8 through a four-speed manual gearbox, the vendor reports it drives well, and the engine runs sweetly. It was last serviced in December 2025 by a Land Rover specialist, with a new radiator and heavy-duty battery fitted. image.png1.57 MB
