The Appeal
The Plus 8 is for many, the iconic Morgan. With classic British styling, excellent performance and superb handling it was in production from 1968 to 2004. Powered by the legendary 3.5l Rover V8 coupled to a superb chassis and lightweight body this Plus 8 provides an exciting and rewarding driving experience with plenty of style.
With extensive recent mechanical work carried out by a Morgan dealership this Plus 8 would make a fantastic car for anyone looking for an easier restoration. With a long MOT it’s ready to drive and enjoy as it is or with some cosmetic restoration it would make an excellent looking classic British sports car that everyone will enjoy. Only three registered keepers, low mileage and with a host of recent work this Plus 8 presents a great opportunity and is one not to be missed.
The History and Paperwork
- Only three registered keepers
- V5 Present and correct
- Morgan chassis record certificate
- MOT to August 2023
- An invoice dated February this year from Berrybrook motors that includes; a full service, new kingpins, new front shocks, track rod ends, significant work to the brakes, clutch master and slave cylinders and new tyres amongst other things
- Clear HPI check
- A selection of invoices for various sundry components over the years
The Interior
- Original green leather interior would benefit from restoration
- Metal and wood Moto-Lita steering wheel
- Seats show signs of heavy wear, but still provide a comfortable ride
- Hood fits well and appears to be weatherproof
Sliding in down behind the metal and wood Moto-Lita steering wheel you can instantly feel why the Plus 8 has been so successful and a staple of the Morgan brand for so many years. Low slung and comfortable with a view down the long and beautifully sculpted bonnet the Plus 8 offers a superb driving position and combined with exciting performance it all adds up to an excellent driving experience.
This Plus 8 still has the original green leather interior, that whilst still very much usable would benefit from refreshment. The soft leather seats both show heavy wear along with a healthy patina on the dashboard. The floor appears sound and all of the controls and dials function as they should. Whilst it would clearly benefit from a re-trim, we think that once you get in and feel the big V8 come to life the only thing you’ll want to do is drive!
The Exterior
- Lightweight aluminium body and wings
- Finished in gunmetal grey
- Superb, distinctive Morgan styling
- Complete with tonneau and soft-top
- Luggage rack
- Brightwork presents well
- Paintwork shows signs of fading, scuffs and chips throughout
- All five tyres have plenty of tread
The Morgan Plus 8 is an instantly recognisable British classic, with its distinctive styling it’s a fantastic looking car whose design has stood the test of time. The aluminium body is finished in the original Gunmetal Grey which is an excellent match to the classic styling of the Plus 8. It’s starting to show its age and with some cosmetic restoration this Plus 8 would look fantastic.
The hood is an excellent tight fit and whilst showing some signs of its age we couldn’t see any rips or tears and it keeps out the weather. All of the brightwork on the car presents well including the optional luggage rack and all of the light lenses, windscreen and trim appear to be in good condition.
The Mechanics
- Superb 3.5l Rover V8 engine
- Sounds fantastic
- 5-speed gearbox
- Extensive mechanical work carried out in February this year
- Underside and engine bay would benefit from cosmetic refurbishment
- No unwanted engine noises
- The owner informs us that it drives as it should
- A little slow to start in the cold, but starts and runs very well once warm
The combination of an excellent chassis married to the ever popular Rover V8 make the Plus 8 a real drivers car. This one has recently had extensive mechanical work carried out at a Morgan dealership and as such is in very good mechanical condition. Whilst, like most cars of this era, it can take a few cranks to get going on a cold morning, once it’s up to temperature it starts easily and runs beautifully, with the V8 sounding fantastic through the twin exhaust. The current owner informs us that it drives as it should, accelerating very well, shifting smoothly and stopping quickly.
Summary
The Plus 8 is a fantastically stylish and good looking sports car that’s very well regarded and with real sporting pedigree. Whilst this fantastic British classic would benefit from some cosmetic work it still cuts a fine shape and is in very good mechanical condition. With the lightweight aluminium body panels, luggage rack, soft top and tonneau it’s well equipped and the low mileage, low keeper count and long MOT make it a compelling proposition for any true petrolhead.
