Vendor supplied images

Highlights

  • Five year bodywork restoration just completed
  • Factory standard, low mileage car
  • Engine just rebuilt and still to be run in
  • One of only 1,123 Carrera Targas
  • Rare 195bhp 3.0 Carrera built for just two years
  • Good history file supporting low mileage

The Appeal

Of the many variations of the classic 911, few are quite as revered as this 1977 car. It is one of the very rare 3.0 Carreras, cars that were fitted with a naturally aspired version of the stronger 930 Turbo all-aluminium engine.
Just 1,123 Targas like this one left the factory between 1977 and 1979. The desirable specification includes factory ‘whale tail’ and small diameter Fuchs alloys. It has been extensively and professionally restored over five years and finished in its factory correct Copper Bronze metallic. The engine has just been rebuilt and is so fresh that it hasn’t even been run in yet. The interior was retrimmed a few years ago.
The very low mileage is supported by a thick history file. This is a very good example of the classic 911 with a compelling specification where all the hard work has already been done.

The History and Paperwork

  • Chassis records confirm this is a 1977 car
  • Only 1,123 Carrera 3.0 Targas were built and this appears to be car 583
  • Original service book included
  • Long term registered keeper who acquired the car in 2012
  • Recent 5 year restoration covering bodywork and engine rebuild
  • Interior retrimmed at an earlier date
  • Factory standard unmodified car with original Copper Bronze metallic colour scheme
  • Dry stored when not in use
  • No MOT is applicable in the Channel Islands
  • Good history file documenting the low mileage
  • Only for sale due to age and ill health of seller
  • If re-registered in the UK 5% import VAT duty will apply on a car of this age

The Condition

  • Freshly restored bodywork finished in original Copper Bronze metallic
  • Standard and unmodified car with desirable whale tail and Fuchs alloys
  • Exterior condition reflects this recent work and low mileage
  • Targa roof in good order with tidy vinyl and good seals
  • New Avon tyres fitted all round
  • Tan leather interior is an older retrim showing only light signs of age
  • Well kept interior with only repaired crack to dash top to note
  • Fitted with a classic-style modern stereo and rear speakers in parcel shelf
  • Beige carpets are presentable but vendor advises some wear
  • Steel spare wheel
  • All gauges reported to work correctly
The Copper Bronze of this 1977 Targa is one of the most attractive colours for this era of 911 and a more subtle alternative to the iconic reds. It arrives with us fresh from a five year restoration that renovated the car to a high standard in its original colour scheme. The Targa roof is in similarly good condition. The bodywork is complemented by a couple of desirable options - the whale tail and Fuchs alloys.
Inside there is a complementary tan leather interior which was retrimmed a few years ago. It has held up well. While there are some minor areas to note in the photographs - including the dash top - it remains very presentable and pleasingly factory standard.

The Mechanics

  • 2,964cc flat six all-aluminium 195bhp engine based on the 930 Turbo
  • Engine recently rebuilt by specialist and still requires running in
  • 5spd manual gearbox reported to be in good working order
  • New brakes which have been overhauled all round
  • Described as driving and stopping as it should
In 1977 Porsche removed the turbo and created the Carrera 3.0. This all-aluminium engine was stronger than the motors that went before and would underpin various iterations of the car going forward. The Carrera 3.0 was only available for two years before the SC arrived.
The mechanicals of this low mileage car have been comprehensively overhauled. The engine was recently rebuilt by a specialist, so recently that it still needs run in. The brakes have also been overhauled. The history file verifies the low mileage.
The vendor is only selling due to ill health and reports that the engine is ‘crisp and tight’ and the car drives well with a good gearbox.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
