The Appeal
Pininfarina’s chiselled 400 was a departure from the firm’s sculptural coupes, but it has aged exceptionally well. Enthusiasts are now catching up, drawn by those looks, the rarity and, of course, that incredible Colombo V12.
The early 400GT, built to 1979, got a sextet of twin choke Webers, helping the motor deliver over 300bhp. While the majority of these cars got the auto box that so upset purists, 147 of the 502 400GTs were equipped with five-speed manual gearboxes. This gorgeous 1978 car is one of only 27 manual 400GTs built in RHD. Its rarity is dialled up yet further thanks to the beautiful Verde Pino Metallizato paintwork, a healthy departure from Rosso Corsa. Indications are, albeit not confirmed, that just two 400GTs were finished in this colour scheme.
This is a car that wears a gentle patina of character that we applaud. It is in fine condition, and while there is scope to take it to the next level, perhaps some of that originality can be retained. In recent years, it has been used sparingly but maintained to a very high level, including annual servicing by the same pair of specialists. The last service was in late 2023, since when the car has been stored and covered less than 1,000 miles. Other notable recent work includes attention to the carburettors and exhaust in 2023, plus new points and condenser in 2024. Interested parties also get the benefit of a recent voluntary MOT that ran to April 2026.
The 400GT is garnering renewed attention, and deservedly so. The earliest carburettor cars, especially those with manual boxes, are the ones to seek out. Don’t miss this one.
