1979 Ford Escort 1.6 Ghia 4dr Manual (Mk2)

Highlights

  • High end ‘Ghia’ specification
  • Used daily and well maintained
  • Excellent overall condition
  • 1.6-litre, 4-speed manual
  • Bespoke stainless exhaust system

The Appeal

Taking over the reins from the legendary Mk1 Escort, the Mk2 had a familiar yet more streamlined design, with more modern engines and specifications. The Ghia model was the “high end” specification, with a plusher interior. Available only as a four door in the late 70s, it makes for an increasingly rare and eminently usable daily classic now.
It’s nice to see a Mk2 that’s been kept close to original factory specification, as the vast majority have been modified or repurposed as rally cars these days. Other than a colour change from gold to white in 2016, this Escort appears to have been kept in original specification. The vendor tells us that they use the car daily as well, so if you’re after a handsome, well maintained classic, then you really do have to consider this gem.

The History and Paperwork

The Interior

  • Period-correct brown velour upholstery to the seats, all of which present in good order with no tears or significant wear to the fabric
  • Brown vinyl seat backs, front headrests and door cards appear to be in good order, with no rips or damage we could see, other than a stain to the driver’s arm rest
  • Perforated cream vinyl headlining looks to be in nice condition, with no damage, staining or sagging
  • Complementary brown carpet runs through the cabin and looks to be in fine fettle
  • Original ‘Ford’ branded radio
  • Manually adjusted mirrors and manual window winders
  • Attractive wood veneer dashboard fascia shows no signs of cracking or warping that we could discern
  • All of the switchgear and controls look good, with some gentle wear and patina adding the the interior’s charm
  • The vendor tells us that everything in the cabin works as it should
  • The boot is trimmed in black carpet that appears to be nearly new, and also holds a full-size spare wheel
  • Pulling back the boot carpet, we see that the boot floor looks to be in superb condition

The Exterior

  • Smart and smoothly applied white paintwork – wearing a few minor marks and blemishes but looking to be in fine condition overall
  • The car was originally gold, but was resprayed in March 2016
  • The brown vinyl roof shows well, with no tears, bubbling or notable UV damage apparent
  • There are some blisters around the arches, sills and lower doors, but overall the bodywork looks to be clean and free from damage or corrosion
  • 13-inch steel wheels with polished lips, finished with a matched set of Toyo tyres
  • All of the brightwork looks smart, with a nice sheen to it and no significant damage we could see
  • Underneath, the car appears to be very straight and tidy, with a little surface corrosion to some drivetrain components, but nothing that would concern us

The Mechanics

  • 1,599cc, naturally aspirated inline-four
  • Four-speed manual transmission
  • Rear-wheel drive
  • Custom stainless steel exhaust system
  • The vendor has fitted new front wheel bearings, front brake pads and a reconditioned alternator
  • We’re assured that the car drives very well, being used daily in the vendor’s locale
  • The engine bay looks lovely and clean, with a polished air cleaner
  • No issues or problems are reported by the vendor

Summary

The Mk2 Escort remains a popular classic for a reason – it’s simple to work on, great to drive and there’s lots of support available for it. If you’re after a genuine and straight classic that you really could use on a daily basis, then this Escort certainly deserves your consideration.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
