THE APPEAL
The Land Rover Series 3 represents the last of the classic “go anywhere” vehicles and one of the ‘coolest’ and appreciating 4x4’s around.
This particular example definitely has the “wow” factor and represents a great opportunity to acquire an immaculate Series 3.
You may notice that we deploy the word “new” rather frequently, and justifiably, as alongside refurbished original parts, this fine looking “Landy” has been completely restored with an abundance of new parts during the last five years.
THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- Ground-up rebuild started by previous owner
- Completed by the current owner
- Huge file of parts invoices
This Series 3 was first registered on the 16th May 1979. Early history has been lost now but the previous owner, who lived in Sheffield, embarked on a ground-up rebuild starting with a new galvanised chassis in 2016. Unfortunately, he was unable to complete the project.
The current owner, and lifelong Land Rover enthusiast, acquired it in March 2022 and set about finishing it. This included commissioning a professional respray and installing a few final touches such as the new hood and sticks.
Past MOT’s indicate that it was back on the road in March 2020. A current ‘Pass’ MOT (136 miles ago) is valid until 2nd April 2023 and it is also taxed until the 1st April 2023.
Accompanying paperwork also includes an up to date V5, Owners handbook, some photographs of the rebuild and a huge file of parts invoices.
THE INTERIOR
- Great condition throughout
- New upholstery
- Seven seats
The cabin and rear space are in great condition. Opening the doors we find new door trims, rubber seals and smooth-operating sliding windows. Up front, the dash has been re-covered and new tasteful black leather-look vinyl seats are in the front and back.
The owner assures us that the correct Jaeger instrumentation, switches and warning lights all operate as they should and the steering wheel, gear levers and pedal rubbers are all in top condition.
New fitted rubber floor mats are in place over sound-deadening material and two static set belts have been fitted. The rear contains a new spare wheel and tyre.
THE EXTERIOR
- Fresh coat of Marine Blue paint
- Galvanised chassis
- New wheels and tyres
With a new galvanised chassis from Richards Chassis in August 2016, and a restored bulkhead and floors, this 88” 4x4 is clearly structurally strong and ready to conquer the world for another 44 years.
The glossy coat of Marine Blue paint is mint, and glass, lights, mirrors and fittings are excellent. A new galvanised front bumper is also in-situ along with a tow ball and mud flaps at the rear. The underside is extremely clean and clearly hasn’t seen a muddy lane or field since the rebuild.
A New canvas hood from Undercover Covers, Birmingham, and new Limestone painted steel wheels and Deestone Extra Traction tyres, finish this Land Rover off a treat.
THE MECHANICS
- Desirable 2.25-litre petrol engine
- Electronic ignition
The durable and reliable 2,286cc 4-cylinder petrol engine is a popular choice, and this example appears to have been well cared for and in good health. Indeed the owner informs us that it “starts on the button, is very quiet, with no smoke, and pulls really well”. It certainly ticked over nicely during the photoshoot.
Like the rest of the vehicle, the engine compartment is restored, clean and perfectly detailed. Judging by some accompanying invoices, the previous owner may have rebuilt the engine to a degree but the details of this or the mileage cannot be confirmed.
Recent replacement mechanical parts include:
- Unleaded head conversion
- Electronic ignition
- New clutch
- New brake servo
- New Radiator
- New Battery
- Main electrical harness from Auto Sparks
SUMMARY
A huge number of hours have gone into making this legendary and gleaming Land Rover looking this good and is a credit to the previous and current owners.
This enduring and capable off-roader is also mechanically up to speed, is easy to maintain and should be a pleasure to drive to your next adventure.
