THE APPEAL
When Rolls-Royce facelifted the Silver Shadow in 1977, it brought back a name from the past to try and boost sales of the more expensive (and thus more profitable) long-wheelbase model.
The Silver Shadow I LWB had flown under the radar for some time, accounting for just one in every nine registrations, but by naming the longer version of the Shadow II the Wraith II, the company managed to raise awareness with a standalone model that went on to account for 20 per cent of sales.
The Silver Wraith II was essentially a Shadow II with an extra four inches in its wheelbase, and even more luxury. It was recognisable by its smaller and more discreet rear window and standard ‘Everflex’ roof, while it also had the enhancements that came with the Shadow II - a modernised cabin, thicker US-compliant impact bumpers and substantial revisions to the steering, suspension and build quality to make it more satisfying to both own and drive.
Registered in June 1979, this example has had a busy life. It was supplied new by Arnett’s of Bournemouth – a respected Rolls-Royce and Bentley main agent – and has had six keepers, who between them have racked up over 200,000 miles. Critically, they have all maintained it impeccably. This is a car that has had thousands spent on it and is still in wonderful condition today. ZC8KzSFJKwHJvojTpORolQnDvBdrXwWp4W26SBpj.jpg1.12 MB
