  • Extra large pop to provides ample accommodation beyond that of the more common conversions
  • Over £7,000 mechanical and cosmetic work since 2021

The Appeal

We’re all familiar by now with Type 2 Volkswagen camper conversions but we’ll wager few will know about the Super Viking. An unofficial Volkswagen converter based in Stanbridge, Motorhomes International briefly marketed several successful Type 2 conversions and the Super Viking was the top of the range.
Here we have a nice example of the Super Viking dating from 1979. Since acquiring the camper in May 2021, the vendor has undertaken work to the interior, pop top and bodywork and it’s now a very usable example. If you’re looking for a vehicle to take holidaying when the summer arrives, this Type 2 would be a great choice.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor on 27th May 2021
  • Exempt from MOT testing and road tax
  • A great deal of work has been carried out during the vendor’s ownership
  • We’re informed that it was last serviced in December 2022 and runs really well

The Interior

  • Recarpeted up front in hard wearing hessian which has been edged in red to complement the paint
  • The living quarters have also been recarpeted and all the flooring presents well
  • New kitchen worktop fitted, again matching the exterior colour
  • The pop-top now has new steel runners and striped canvas complete with windows
  • The boards have been removed and the underside of the roof remains in an unfinished state, leaving it up to the next owner how they would like this finished
  • The vendor informs us that the front seats are Porsche items
  • All the upholstery throughout has been trimmed in matching vinyl and is in really fine shape
  • The cabinetry is adorned with various stickers and accessories
  • Equipped with all the usual camping amenities including a gas stove, sink and various cupboards
  • Securon seat belts fitted in the rear also to allow more passengers

The Exterior

  • Now finished in red to a good standard
  • Straight bodywork with good door fit and panel alignment
  • Some panels at the rear have reportedly been replaced during the vendor’s ownership
  • We’re informed that the lower sections of the bodywork all around the van have received extensive welding and fabrication
  • Some yellow paint (the previous colour) does show in places such as in some of the door shuts and inside the engine compartment
  • We could see some corrosion underneath, most notably at the front and also to the nearside chassis rail just in front of the gearbox
  • The sills appear very sound
  • All the wheel arches appear very sound
  • The bumpers present very well, as does the remainder of the exterior trim
  • There is some crazing to the glass fibre pop top but this is not especially noticeable
  • The painted steel wheels are in good shape and are complete with hub caps

The Mechanics

  • 1600cc air-cooled engine
  • We’re informed that it was last serviced in December 2022
  • Inside the engine compartment, a couple of areas would benefit from some tidying but it presents well overall
  • The vendor reports that the van runs brilliantly and drives well

Summary

It’s no wonder these Type 2 Volkswagens are so sought after. They’re both evocative of freedom and boast practical camping facilities.

This is a smart example and a lesser seen conversion making it a great choice for anyone who’s always fancied one.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
