1981 Ford Fiesta 1300 Supersport (Mk1)

Highlights

  • In current ownership for 21 years
  • Period interior
  • Unmodified throughout
  • Highly impressive paperwork file ranging from clippings to invoices and booklets

The Appeal

Launched in 1980 on the back of the already legendary Mk1 Fiesta, the Fiesta Supersport was Ford’s tentative dip into the waters of producing a sporty hatchback. Far from being a reinvention of the wheel, it was still an impressive update.
The plastic bumpers, arch extensions and those 13” wheels all came together to make an aggressive little looker, soundtracked by the model’s Kent Crossflow motor, twin-choke webers and mounted on a lower, wider-tracked suspension with a rear anti-roll bar.
Available only for a single year, the Supersport proved so successful that the XR2 followed hot on its heels with minimal chains. The result is that a true pedigree Supersport is exceptionally scarce, and has never been more in demand.
This example comes to us in good order, with a highly impressive paperwork file and no known modifications - making for a rare survivor.

The History and Paperwork

  • In current ownership since August 2002
  • MOT exempt, but last tested in April 2021 with no advisories
  • Less than 500 miles done since
  • 72,434 miles - however this is on a five-figure odometer and can’t be fully verified
  • Two sets of keys
  • Impressive binder of paperwork including:
    • Selection of invoices dating back to the 80s
    • Clippings, receipts, invoices and notes from previous mechanical work
    • Brand notes for oil and filter changes
    • Latest MOT certificate and V5 document
    • Selection of Ford Fiesta booklets including manuals, guides and accessories book

The Interior

  • Beautifully presented interior with only minor signs of wear
  • Clean, well-presented dashboard free of cracks or peeling finish
  • All instruments are bright and well-presented
  • Original period Sharp AN55 stereo system - though this could do with a clean
  • Glovebox is clean and well presented
  • Original part-tartan seats in good order, with no rips or tears
  • Some marks and stains to the black vinyl seat surrounds
  • Some light signs of corrosion to the seat mounts
  • Door cards are clean and well presented with no signs of wear
  • Carpets and headlining are both clean and well-presented
  • Boot is clean and well-presented, protected by carpet underlay
  • Parcel shelf is clean and well-kept
  • No reports of any faults to the car’s internal instruments

The Exterior

  • Red paintwork is in fair condition though could use a refresh
  • Some blistering in multiple areas, particularly on the pillars and bonnet
  • Some paint loss and cracking to the front grill, exposing the metal underneath
  • Hatchback rim shows extensive cracking and exposes some metal
  • Some paint loss to the lower arches and sills
  • Branding is all present and correct, and brightly presented
  • Headlight lenses and windows all look to be in good order with no fractures
  • Sunroof is clean and looks well sealed
  • Car is sitting on its original alloys, and shod in a full set of Yokohama Tyres
  • Underneath, the car looks solid with age-commensurate levels of surface corrosion
  • Overall, an excellent example with only cosmetic restoration required

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the desirable 1298cc Kent Crossflow engine
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Entirely unmodified under current ownership
  • Engine bay looks to be in good order with age-commensurate wear
  • No faults listed on the latest MOT and no reports of faults that have developed since
  • A good, solid overall example throughout

Summary

Sporty, stylish and versatile, the Supersport is a much-desired model of the Fiesta, and makes for an utterly superb daily driver as much as it does a tight-handling show-off of a motor. With some cosmetic restoration required, this rare example should make for a brilliant drive.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
