1982 Ferrari 308 GTBi

Highlights

  • Exceptionally low mileage.
  • Presentable condition throughout.
  • Recently serviced and cambelt replaced.

The Background

The Ferrari 308 GTB Berlinetta and targa-topped 308 GTS are V8 mid-engined, two-seater sports cars manufactured by the Italian carmaker from 1975 to 1985. It made its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1975.
The 308 was the very model made famous by the television series Magnum, P.I. in which the series' lead, Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) drove Robin Masters’ 308 GTS as he investigated his way around Oahu in Hawaii in the eight seasons from 1980 to 1988.
The 308 replaced the Dino 246 GT and GTS in 1975 and was updated as the 328 GTB/GTS in 1985. The similar 208 GTB and GTS were equipped with a smaller, initially naturally aspirated and later turbocharged, two-litre engine, and were sold mainly in Italy.
The 308’s F106 AB V8 engine was equipped with four twin-choke Weber 40DCNF carburettors and single coil ignition. European versions of the 308 GTB produced 252bhp at 6,600 rpm, redlining at 7,700rpm.
In 1980, Ferrari offered the Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection system, which led to the 308 GTBi and GTSi – the GTBi variant of which is offered here. Emissions decreased, at the price of a power drop to 211bhp) on European models. The fuel injection was coupled to a Marelli MED 803A Digiplex electronic ignition, incorporating a coil, distributor, and ignition module for each bank of cylinders.
Outside, the car was identical to the 308 GTB/GTS, save for metric sized wheels of a slightly different design. Inside, the clock and oil temperature gauge were moved to the centre console. Other differences included a new black steering wheel with three perforated spokes and seats of a different pattern.
During its production run, just 494 GTBi’s were produced before the model was succeeded by the 308 Quattrovalvole in 1982.

The History

One of the last few 308 GTBi’s to come off the Maranello production line prior to the introduction of the 308 Quattrovalvole in October 1982, ‘KGB 111Y’ received its first registration on 3rd September, 1982.
This iconic 308 GTBi has been enjoyed by just three owners since new and has been driven just 12,766 miles over the years.

The Paperwork

Along with the V5C, there are a number of original Ferrari owner’s manuals, service and workshop books and parts documents detailing parts and works completed over the years, but particularly in 2020.

The Interior

The ‘lovingly used’ and all-original interior of this 308 GTBi is presented in black leather and matching carpets. The door cards are in good order, as are the upholstery, dashboard and other interior features and fittings, all of which reflect their age of nearly 40 years, rather than the mileage enjoyed.

The Exterior

Finished in Rosso Red (naturally!), the gleaming paintwork presents very well and the brightwork and badging are in good condition. All body panels present as Maranello intended them to – straight and blemish-free.

The Mechanics

For peace of mind for its new keeper, a fresh MoT will accompany the sale of the car. The 3.0-litre V8 engine is said to fire up at the first task, settling into a steady and burbling idle and sounds crisp and sharp when revved.
During 2020, the car received a full service during which the all-important cambelt, brake pads, water pump and thermostat were replaced – more in respect of their age than distance travelled.
The visible mechanicals underneath appear to be tidy and in good condition commensurate with age.

The Appeal

Ferrari is the quintessential Italian automaker considered by many to be the purveyor of the world’s best and most beautiful hand-built sports cars. Always in high demand for those who have the means – and perhaps even those who don’t – Ferrari continues to creep into the dreams of die-hard gearheads and the most casual of auto enthusiasts.
If you're not head-over-heels in love with Ferrari yet, this iconic 308 GTBi is sure to fuel your enthusiasm for the marque.
