The Appeal
This is not your typical Land Rover. It isn't even your typical modified Land Rover. People usually exchange the original 2.25-litre petrol engine for a Rover V8 or later TDi unit, but this custom build chooses to preserve that venerable original powerplant by honouring it with some clever upgrades.
This 88" Series III was purchased as a project in 2002 and subjected to an extensive restoration, completed in 2017 by an experienced engineer. The work was extensive: a Marsland galvanised chassis was fitted, along with new floors, sills, door pillars, doors, windows, and rubber seals throughout. Mechanically, the engine was comprehensively rebuilt and the running gear renewed from end to end, including new brake components with a remote servo, new steering box, springs, shock absorbers, and Discovery differentials. A twin SU carburettor conversion and stainless steel exhaust system have been fitted, and the vendor describes the resulting engine pick-up and exhaust note as impressive. Inside, the seats, mats, and dashboard have all been renewed, with a bespoke arrangement of Smiths gauges adding character.
Approximately 5,500 miles have been covered since the rebuild. The vehicle was dry-stored during a period of the owner's ill health before being MOT'd in October 2025. The vendor describes it as lovely to drive and reports that it draws positive comments wherever it goes. Now reluctantly offered for sale, this is a thoroughly rebuilt Series 3 with long-term, caring ownership behind it.
