The Appeal

While it may seem unthinkable to us now, the 928 was one of Porsche’s attempts to kill off the 911. with growing fuel crises concerns and slumping sales of the 911, the brand wasn’t always as in love with its engined sports car as it is today. During the 1970s, executives, including owner Ferdinand Porsche, were instead considering a luxury touring car with a conventional engine and layout to bolster the current line-up.
In 1971, Fuhrmann initiated a design study which resulted in the 928, the company’s first clean sheet design for its own model. After much deliberation and totting up of numbers, the engine they chose to use in the first-generation model was a 4.5 litre, carburetted V8, producing around 230 - 240 bhp. This 1982 Series 1 example is something of a survivor, having been lovingly preserved rather than restored. It comes with a substantial history file along with a Porsche Classic Recognition document and is exempt from MOT testing and road tax.

The History and Paperwork

  • Well-documented service history
  • £4,000 was spent in 2021
  • Excellent provenance with driver’s manual and original service book
  • Two sets of keys
  • Stacks of paperwork
  • MOT exempt, with last test expiring 07.09.2022
  • Porsche Classic Recognition document
  • Bidders should be aware that the current private registration will not be sold with the car, the original registration of OUH 589X will be re-instated

Supplied on the 1st of May 1982, the first registered keeper kept the 928 for three decades where it was looked after by the local Porsche dealership. After passing through a couple of keepers it ended up in another enthusiast's collection and then sold on twice through Car & Classic. A previous owner has also had a well-known Porsche specialist (George Morrison - Glasgow) go through all the electronics, as well as having a timing belt change and a full service.

The Condition

  • Reportedly rare Zinc/Silver metallic paint is in amazing condition, beautifully showing off the design of the body
  • The car has received over £5,000 worth of paintwork at a specialist body shop in November 2022 to ensure the paintwork is kept in such high-quality condition and to sort any imperfections received over the years
  • Pop-up headlights work as intended
  • Tele-dial wheels are in fantastic condition too and the Dunlop Sport 2000 tyres have good tread left
  • All rubbers and seals are reportedly in good condition and there is little to no corrosion around the body – we have tried to show all common areas in the photo gallery for clarity
  • Navy/Silver leather interior is a true time capsule and is in great condition
  • All electronics working as they should
  • Modern addition of a Pioneer flip screen stereo with phone connectivity, car-play and DAB radio
  • New Pioneer speakers fitted too
  • Cruise control and A/C working well
  • No cracking, warping or damage to the dash can be obviously seen and the rest of the interior is in the same great shape
  • Rear boot space is ample and underneath the carpet lives the space-saver spare wheel along with tool kit and a battery cut-off switch

The Mechanics

  • 4.5-litre water-cooled V8
  • Automatic gearbox
  • The mechanicals, as with all over areas of this car have been well taken care
  • We're informed that it sounds lovely and drives superbly
  • Paperwork suggests that anything the car has needed has been addressed in a timely manner and a routine service schedule is reported to have been kept to
  • During the photoshoot the car started, ran, idled, drove and stopped exactly as it should

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
