1982 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40

Highlights

  • Extensively restored model
  • Popular modernised engine and transmission swap
  • Iconic BJ40 Land Cruiser styling

The Appeal

The BJ40 Land Cruiser is, alongside the likes of the G-Wagon and Defender, one of the most iconic off-road 4x4s around.

Its recognisable shape and commendable off-road prowess contribute to the vehicle’s status.

Having been thoroughly restored in recent years, this particular model looks in near-perfect condition and should perform just as well as it looks thanks to a few popular changes under the shell.

From a 13B-T engine swap to an H55f transmission, this could be a Land Cruiser restorer’s dream project.

The Interior

  • Fully retrimmed interior
  • Radio included in sale
  • Perfect amount of patina

The freshly retrimmed interior of this BJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser is in stark contrast from the rugged exterior styling.

Excellent condition trim throughout the cabin makes for a wonderful place to be. From the carpets to the seats and the headlining, this off-roader is in immaculate shape.

In the back, you’ll find folding benches perfect for swapping out passengers for objects found on the car’s adventures off the beaten track.

Despite the extensive restoration which includes a widely retrimmed interior, many of the more original parts such as the dashboard and controls have just the perfect amount of patina. Giving the car plenty of character, this makes for the perfect final touch to what is a stylish cab.

As for the dashboard, the radio is visibly missing from the photos, though despite not being fitted, a unit does come with the vehicle.

The Exterior

  • Excellently restored exterior
  • Gorgeous bright blue and white two-tone paint
  • Plenty of off-road-oriented modifications

Step outside this Land Cruiser and you’ll immediately spot the enormous BF Goodrich All Terrain tyres which give the car a particularly lofty stance.

Plenty of other parts demonstrate the model’s off-road prowess such as the large winch attached to the front bumper and the snorkel that towers over the windscreen.

A full-size spare wheel and additional fuel canister ensure this car shouldn’t get stuck even in the most remote places.

As well as the many modifications, the car has been put through a thorough restoration project helping it look as perfect as can be today. The iconic two-tone design finished in Toyota’s Medium Blue paint is splendid while the hub caps sparkle in the sunlight.

Underneath, this example seems to have lots of protection while Bilstein B6 shock absorbers are fitted to all four corners.

The Mechanics

  • B-Series engine replaced with 3.4-litre turbodiesel 13B-T
  • Popular H55f 5-speed transmission swap

Replacing the diesel B-Series engine originally fitted to the BJ40 Land Cruiser is a 3.4-litre turbo diesel 13B-T engine.

This ups power from the standard 80 hp to a more useable 120 hp. During the engine swap, the new power plant was stripped and inspected thoroughly. Just a few years since that extensive restoration, the engine is said to perform excellently.

Transferring the power in to forward momentum is a 5-speed transmission originally found in the later HJ60 replacing the standard car’s 4-speed allowing full use of the stronger engine.

The owner points out how the car feels more comfortable reaching motorway speeds thanks to the extra gear. A new clutch has been fitted while the gearbox was also stripped down and rejuvenated.

Not only does this off-roader accelerate and sit at speed comfortably, it also stops well thanks to disc brakes at the front and drum brakes on the rear axle.

Summary

Having spent plenty of time in warmer countries, this car is in great condition and has been excellently restored.

The vehicle looks great and with countless modifications, this BJ40 Land Cruiser is surely one-of-a-kind able to take on any lane, bog or incline thrown at it.

Though the modernised engine and gearbox also make it a great alternative to more recent off-roaders.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
