1982 Triumph T140LE Royal Wedding Special

Highlights

 • Extremely low mileage – odometer shows just 6,616 miles from new
 • Genuine Royal Wedding Special – 1 of 125 UK bikes
 • Presented in original condition

The Appeal

Based on the capable and stylish Triumph T140 the LE Royal Wedding Special was built to commemorate the marriage of Lady Diana Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales.

With only 250 units ever being made, with 125 going to the United States and 125 staying in the UK, they are extremely rare to find and with this one being in such good condition it is a perfect collector’s item.

With this bike only showing a touch over 6,000 miles from new it is a great proposition for a Royal family lover who has a keen passion for motorcycles.

There are little touches around the bike that show that it hasn’t been restored throughout its life and it is presented in original condition.

The History and Paperwork

 • Manufactured in 1982 this bike is supplied to the first owner through Hastings Motorcycle, a motorcycle dealer in Hastings, East Sussex. We know this              because the bike still wears this sticker on the rear mudguard
 • It would appear that the first, and the three subsequent owners, recognise the importance of this bike and they don’t ride her too much
 • An original feature, that proves the frame hasn’t been painted, is the ‘Made in England’ stick on the front of the frame
 • To match the original stickers, this bike proudly wears it special royal plaque just in front of the fuel tank.
 • This plaque reads ‘manufactured by Triumph Motorcycles LTD. in celebration of the wedding of The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. Due to its position, it was hard to photograph but we got as much as we could
 • A few other special features that prove this is a genuine Royal Wedding bike are the twin front discs and the ‘Morris’ alloy wheels
 • The LE also boasts electric starting, Bing carburettors, and Marzocchi Strada gas-oil rear shock absorbers.
 • It was mentioned that there is a little bit of paperwork that will come with her, but on the day the photos were taken only the V5 was present.
 • This is an incredibly rare and special Triumph and with it being in such original condition whoever gets to own this bike next will have a lot of fun with her.

The Interior & The Exterior

 • The chrome tank is in great condition
 • The special Morris alloy wheels look excellent
 • Fitted with twin discs up front it looks sporty
 • Just below the seat, the Bonneville Royal 1981 plaque is easily seen
 • Original features like the dealer sticker and ‘made in England’ sticker still remain
 • The seat and handlebars are in great condition
If we focus on items that could be classed as more of the interior of a motorcycle, such as the seat, footpegs, and handlebars we can see that this bike is in great condition.

With so few miles complete over the past 40 years the grips on the handlebars look like new and so does the big seat that looks remarkably comfortable for a motorcycle.

A few key areas within the ‘interior’ that point to this bike being a genuine Royal Wedding bike are the plaque that sits in front of the chrome petrol tank, the Royal 1981 moniker that sits on the side panels, and the 4-gallon petrol tank with its plain Triumph badge and scallops that correspond to the side panel colour.

As you can imagine these elements are in great condition too, this bike has obviously been stored properly throughout its life.

Moving to more of the exterior elements of the bike, such as the engine bay, exhausts, and wheels we can see that these too are in really good condition. As this bike has not covered many miles it has been preserved, spared from the less-than-ideal British weather.

There are signs of slight pitting to some of the chrome work, but no major cases of corrosion. Remember this bike is in original condition, so for the chrome to have survived 40 years is good going.

Overall, the visual appearance of this bike is great.

With so many little nods towards the Royal wedding here and there it will make the perfect bike for someone who not only is a fan of the Royal family but is also a fan of good looking motorcycles.

The Mechanics

 • Fully serviced when the current owner got her in 2015
 • Twin front discs and Marzocchi shock absorbers fitted from the factory
 • Great bike to ride
The Triumph T140 is a very capable motorcycle, fitted with a large 750 cc engine that is capable of 49hp it will shift you down the road at a vast rate of knots. All of that power is put down into the road via a 5-speed sequential gearbox.

When looking at a genuine T140 LE Royal Wedding there are a few mechanical upgrades over the base model.

These include the Marzocchi gas-oil rear shocks that aid the bike's ride quality, electric starting to make them easier to live with and the additional Bing carburettors to help achieve the bike's great performance.

With this bike having completed so few miles since new we can only imagine that the internal components are still like new. The current owner did put the bike through full service when they acquired it in 2015 and they haven’t ridden it much since then.

It was also mentioned that this bike starts up perfectly and will idle nicely.

Whoever gets to ride this bike will have a smile from ear to ear, with the perfect weather for long bike rides on the horizon this should be the perfect addition to your stable.

Summary

This bike is one of those unicorns that seldom come up for sale, with only 125 ever being produced for the UK market you may not see another one come up for sale soon.

With this bike's overall condition and the limited number of miles, it is the perfect bike to ride, or even as a collector’s item.

Whatever you decided to do with it, this bike will reward you with a lot of thrills and may even be a savvy investment for the future.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
