1983 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Unrestored Capri 2.8i
  • Two owners, last for 35 years
  • Known history
  • Well-loved and original

THE APPEAL

With a production run of almost 20 years, it’s no wonder that the Ford Capri is regarded as one of the UK’s all-time classics.

This one has a huge amount in its favour. It’s a late Mk 3 2.8 Injection – the best powerplant and the plushest trim level. It has had just two previous keepers – the first a company that used it from 1983 to 1987 and the second its most recent owner, who bought it in 1987. The car was returned to the road in 2018 after a nine-year lay-up.

It’s a completely original and unrestored car is largely excellent condition, with room for some small cosmetic improvements.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Two owners from new
  • UK V5C
  • MOT until May 2023
  • Original handbook pack
  • 2.8 Injection supplement
  • Manual and handbooks
  • Lots of old MOTs
  • Invoices for recent parts

THE INTERIOR

  • Two-tone grey Recaro sports seats
  • Upgraded Blaupunkt digital stereo
  • Original Ford rubber mats
  • Electric windows

The Capri is lovely inside, with the all-important Recaro sports seats – a real piece of 1980s iconography at the same time as being comfortable and supportive. They’re in fabulous condition.

The rest of the cabin is great, too, with smart grey carpets still protected by the original Ford rubber mats and only the slightest bit of fading to the woodgrain-effect dash inserts. The six-dial dash is free from cracks and all of the dials work as they ought to, while the luggage area is in fine condition.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Two-tone Caspian Blue and Strato Silver
  • Excellent ‘pepperpot’ alloys
  • Structurally excellent
  • Some minor cosmetics required to make perfect

Smartly presented in two-tone Caspian Blue over Strato Silver, the Capri sits on an excellent set of “pepperpot” alloy wheels, which come with a matching spare. The car looks great overall, and is very smartly presented.

Up close, there are a couple of areas that would benefit from some minor cosmetic attention – there’s a smattering of rust on the rear valance behind the offside rear arch and a couple of small bubbles on both front wings and the doors – nothing a bodyshop couldn’t put right without too much expense and certainly nothing structural, while the underside of the car appears very solid indeed.

There are also a couple of very shallow dents on one wing and on the bonnet – nothing to write home about but you’ll want them sorting if you chose to put this car into concours condition.

The Capri also has a set of aftermarket headlight covers to give a flat front end appearance. They’re an acquired taste – you’ll either love or hate them – but they’re very easily removed if not to your tastes.

THE MECHANICS

  • 2.8-litre Injected V6
  • 5-spd manual
  • Drives superbly
  • Well-maintained by previous owner

The fuel-injected Ford ‘Cologne’ V6 is one of the company’s best-loved engines and although its 130bhp power output might sound quite modest, it’s eminently tuneable and also very strong. This one has covered just over 100,000 miles and runs sweetly with no untoward noises, leaks or excessive smoke.

The vendor reports that it has been well-maintained and that the car drives well, with no known or apparent faults.

SUMMARY

This is a great example of a standard, unmolested and unmodified 2.8i that is in original, unspoilt condition. It’s in very sound and smart overall order and would be very easy to take to the next level if you wanted a show car example of a totally original 1980s Capri.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
