The Background

The 944 was designed and produced by Porsche between 1982 and 1991. As an evolution of the previous 924, it continued with the time honoured for sports cars of a front engine, rear wheel drive configuration.
Expertly built out of top-quality Porsche components & utilising a modified 924 body shell, they offered an entry level sports car into the Porsche fold, or looking at it another way, a front engine alternative to the 911.

Up until the introduction of the Boxter, the 944 was Porsche’s most successful sports car.

The History

This 944 was first registered on the 2nd of November 1983 in Reading, Berkshire .
Very little is known of its earlier history, although it appears to have spent time in Kent before moving up to Suffolk by 2003.

From its Mot history, it was probably in storage between 2011 and 2018 before being bought by a friend of the vendors with the intention of converting the 944 into a track day car.

When it was stripped down for inspection, the shell was found to be in remarkably good condition and deemed too good for track use.

Consequently, it was rebuilt as a road car and bought by the current owner in 2019.
Using very little since and having other cars to play with, he’s decided that it’s time for the Porsche to move on.

Paperwork

There is a current V5c in the vendor's name and a valid Mot certificate to May 2022.
It also comes with the original Porsche owners’ manuals as supplied when new & some receipts.

Interior

When bought in 2018, the Porsche had no interior so a decent one was sourced and fitted. The seats have been recently re-upholstered in a mix of black leather & Alcantara and are therefore looking great.
Door cards too are leather covered and in good condition and a little cleaning & tidying of the carpets & dash will have this 944 looking as good inside as it does out.

Exterior

Starting with a very sound body shell, it has recently been prepared and painted in white and looks stunning, especially when contrasted with the black boot spoiler and bumper strips.
The observant amongst you will notice that this is a desirable no sunroof shell, sought after by race car builders.

It sits on slightly later 944 15” alloy wheels with 215/60 tyres which combined with suspension mods, fill the wheel arches much better than when they left the factory.

Just one small observation, the moulding under the rear bumper needs a little attention, probably it’s just missing a couple of clips keeping it secure.

Mechanics

The engine & gearbox would appear to be in good health, starting and going into gear easily and smoothly. It’s recently been serviced including the fitting of new timing belts, oh and I nearly forgot to mention the fast road cam that’s now handling the engine valve opening, adding just a little more pep to the package. A new stainless-steel sports exhaust handles all those hot gases and makes a lovely nonstandard burble when the throttle is blipped.

During the rebuild, a new fuel tank was installed with braided fuel pipes now supplying petrol up front to the fuel injection.

Suspension has been upgraded with the addition of wider 968 suspension arms and bigger 968 brakes which improve handling and braking accordingly.

Appeal

An affordable Porsche, what’s not to like!
The 944’s have been hugely overlooked over the last few years, with prices at rock bottom. Quite why we’ll never understand as they really are a great looking sports car.

Quick off the mark even by modern standards, sharp handling, a pleasure to drive…..and here comes the but…. but better get in quick and buy one as they have caught the keen enthusiasts eye and prices are on the up and after all, it is a Porsche, and surely everyone needs to have one in their garage.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
