1983 Range Rover Classic - ‘In Vogue’ Special Edition

Highlights

  • Rare ‘In Vogue’ special edition
  • Many original and spare parts
  • Well maintained and very usable
  • Manual 3.5-litre V8
  • MOT to July 2023

The Appeal

First launched in collaboration with Vogue magazine in 1981, this ‘In Vogue’ is one of the rarer and more sought after Range Rover Classic special editions. Apparently, just 350 were made in 1983, so this handsome machine is a wonderful survivor.
Presented in good condition, with lots of original and spare parts, a fine history and even the original picnic hamper present and correct, this smart classic all-roader would make a fantastic daily classic.
With its potent and characterful V8 drivetrain and those chiselled looks, this is one SUV that will turn heads for all the right reasons.

  • A number of spares, both new-old-stock and secondhand, included with the sale

The Interior

  • Original ‘Palomino’ cloth interior in good overall condition, showing some wear from use and age, but no tears or significant damage we could see
  • Tan carpet and vinyl door cards nicely complement the upholstery and show in good condition for their age
  • Non air-conditioning dashboard installed, but original dash is included with the sale
  • The knobs on the gear levels and transfer box have been changed for replica billet items as the originals were worn
  • Mercedes-Benz Bluetooth/USB/Aux stereo system installed, although the original is also included
  • Walnut door caps were relacquered in 2014 and present in very good order
  • The headliner has been replaced with a fibreglass item from Famous Four

  • The trim looks to be in nice condition, with a light patination that suits the vehicle well
  • The centre console trim is included but currently not fitted
  • We’re informed that the fuel and choke lights are currently not working
  • In the boot, there are some marks and stains to the carpet

  • There is some minor bubbling to the lower tailgate and the near-side front lower wing
  • Currently wearing 16-inch five-spoke CSK wheels, with Michelin tyres (the original three-spoke wheels are also included)
  • It’s reported that the chassis has been cleaned and repairs as necessary (minimal welding) and is in good, solid condition
  • A new rear crossmember and fuel tank have been fitted
  • The vendor tells us that whenever anything has been removed or replaced, new stainless steel fittings have been installed

The Mechanics

  • 3,528cc V8 engine reported to run well, with the only issues reported being that the choke needs some adjustment
  • New engine loom from Autosparks fitted in 2020
  • Carburretors were rebuilt and tuned by specialists in January 2022
  • There is some oil leaking from the rocker gasket and sump
  • Full stainless steel exhaust system – including manifolds – fitted in 2020
  • LT77 five-speed manual transmission
  • New clutch and transmission fitted in December 1996 at about 60,000 miles
  • High and low ratio transfer box and locking diffs – all working as they should according to the vendor
  • There is a slight power steering fluid weep, but a reconditioned PAS box and steering column are included in the sale
  • Air-conditioning condenser and pump not present
  • A new alternator has been fitted
  • Electronic ignition neatly installed in the distributor
  • New water pump, pulley, viscous coupling and fan installed in March 2021

Summary

Presented in very good, usable condition, this Range Rover Classic would be ideal as a daily classic or as a rolling restoration project.

In fine mechanical condition and with many rare parts and spares included, we think is a great opportunity to acquire one of the most iconic British vehicles ever made.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
