The Appeal
This rather tasty Mk1 cabriolet is a treat for Veedub enthusiasts. It is a bespoke build, executed by the current long-term keeper, that cleverly channels the pure lines of the early chrome bumper models with some interesting tweaks, like the wider arches and ATS Classic alloys, that dial up the looks.
Looking rather good in Birch Green Paint Code: L511, it is a really well presented car that benefits from a long list of cosmetic and mechanical improvements. It was thoroughly restored around 10 years ago. The vendor describes the work as a bespoke build using genuine VW parts throughout. The work included a complete respray following rust removal; the underside was welded, sealed and made watertight. Numerous panels were replaced, and the car now wears chrome bumpers, mirrors and waistline trim in place of the original plastic items, complemented by ATS classic wheels and a mohair roof. Inside, the seats, door panels and dashboard have all been renewed.
Mechanically, the engine was skimmed, stripped and fully serviced in 2021, and the car benefits from Spax adjustable suspension along with a replacement exhaust, radiator, battery and brake pads. Since completion, it has been carefully dry stored and, as you can check in the photos, properly looked after.
Now MOT exempt, the most recent test in 2024 contained only one advisory noting that the underside is undersealed.
