The Appeal
The Mk1 Golf GTI Campaign is arguably the original hot hatchback at its peak. Light, nimble, and punchy—it delivered sports car thrills with everyday usability. The Mk1 Golf GTI changed the game when it arrived on the scene in 1976, and some might say it still sets the standard today.
By 1983, the Mk1 GTI was fast becoming an icon. The Campaign was its farewell, prior to the introduction of the Mk2—the Campaign offered various features to denote it as a special edition which included; Pirelli ‘P-slot’ alloy wheels, a sunroof, green-tinted glass, the four-light front grille, and a two-dial dashboard. Everything the discerning buyer required, fitted from factory.
Today it delivers a thoroughly engaging modern classic driving experience. No driving modes. No screens. Just a throttle, clutch and brake, a steering wheel, a slick five-speed gearbox and, hopefully, a smile from ear-to-ear. The feel of the car is raw, immediate, and alive. It isn’t just a modern classic—it became a blueprint. The forebear of every hot hatch since.
