The Background

At the International Geneva Motor Show in 1980, Audi released the Quattro, with its box arches and revolutionary state of the art four-wheel drive system. The Quattro design goes back to 1977, in the deep snow of Sweden, where a team of Audi engineers were testing their military all-terrain vehicles which would outperform other more powerful models.

This led the team to developing an Audi 80 with the drivetrain from the military all-terrain vehicles, and it was there that the Quattro idea was born to be used in road-going vehicles.

This new design gave the Audi Quattro some of the best handling characteristics ever to come out of the Audi factory, and coupled with a 2.1 litre turbocharged engine, made it a very exclusive package. Originally planned for low volume production, once released, the demand was more popular than anticipated, even despite the high price tag.

With huge success in the motorsport world, and in particular rallying, the Quattro has earned the right to become one of the most iconic cars to come out of the 1980’s.

The History

The seller of this 1984 Audi UR Quattro 10 Valve, purchased the vehicle in 2011, and the previous owner had owned the car from 1996, which is where a small fortune had been spent on the UR Quattro. Most of the work carried out from the late 90’s up until now has been done by famous Audi tuners, Dialynx, or another well known Audi specialist, Keith Edwards Motors.

Anything that has been done to the car is well documented in the large history file. Just some of the main work has included a rebuilt engine using 82.5mm pistons, a hybrid turbo and an AP Racing big brake kit. This was completed in 2006, and since then there have been other new parts fitted, such as water pump, fuel pump, injector service and more recently a replacement ignition system to ensure everything is just right, plus many more things which have improved the reliability and performance of the Quattro.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present and shows 3 previous keepers. An extensive history file with plenty of invoices shows the Audi has been treated to the finer things in life by some of the best people in the business.

The original handbooks and servicebook are present, which show main dealer stamps up to 34,172 miles. An MOT was carried out on 18th August, 2021.

The Interior

The inside of the Audi is in original condition and shows very little signs of wear for the age and mileage of the vehicle. The black and grey check material on the driver's seat is in excellent condition with very little, if any, wear to the bolster. The seat shows no signs of sagging and the same can be said for the passenger seat. The rear seat is again excellent, and does not show any signs of having any real use over the years.

The dashboard is free from any splits or cracks, and sitting in the driver's seat, to your right is a Turbosmart boost gauge which works as it should. The instruments have recently been repaired in March 2021 and are working as they should. Looking at the MOT history, the instruments have been replaced in 2007, where the mileage went from 73,932 to 3,959 miles, making the car to have approximately 85,000 miles on.

The switch gear is all reported to be working as it should. The seller did mention that he’s never used the heated seats, so doesn't know about these. The electric windows go up and down as they should but are a little slow, as is often the case on vehicles of this age. There is an aftermarket Sony CD head unit fitted, and this is working as it should.

The carpet is in very good order, with no real wear to the heel pad, and up above, the headlining is also as it should be with no damage or sagging. Into the boot, and to your left is the spare space saver wheel and the carpet is nice and clean.

The Exterior

Finished in white, the UR Quattro is presented really well and looks to be mostly original. There has been some paintwork carried out to the driver's door in 2006, and the rear wheel arches in 2012.

Starting at the front, there are a couple of age-related chips, as you would expect for such an honest car. The lights are in good condition, with no cracks or chips to any of the lenses. The bonnet aligns straight and even on both sides.

Around to the sides, and the lines of this box arch Audi are stunning, there are no dings to worry about and the doors align as they should. There is a small blister on the driver’s side rear wheel arch, towards the front edge. The doors open with ease and a solid clunk sound can be heard as they close. The door mirrors have a few chips to them, but could easily be resprayed in satin black. As for the windows, these are all in good condition with no noticeable scratches to mention, and the seals are in good order.

Around to the rear, there are no scuffs on the bumper, the boot lid looks to align as it should, and the badges are in good condition. The standard tinted lights are free from splits or cracks; there are a couple of marks on the nearside light, which may polish out. The Coupe panel is also free from any cracks.

The wheels are in the original condition and have never been refurbished. Following the last MOT there was an advisory for perished tyres, and the seller has gone to great lengths to replace these with the original spec UR Quattro tyres, which are Pirelli P700-Z at a cost of £1,006.80.

The Mechanics

A 2.1 litre 5-cylinder 10 valve turbocharged engine, was certainly enough to keep most people entertained in 1984. This Quattro has been improved with some subtle yet practical modifications.

The engine in the Audi was replaced in 2001, with a second hand MB engine, and then in 2006 the engine was rebuilt by Dialynx, with new 82.5mm pistons, main bearings and big end bearings. This was done at around 71,000 miles. The next big engine work was six years later, when a new water pump, cam belt piston rings and a new piston to cylinder 2 were fitted.

The big end shells were also replaced as a precaution whilst the engine was apart. Since then, there has been a new fuel pump in 2019, and a replacement ignition system fitted by Keith Edwards in February 2021, which has enabled the 10 valve to run on 20 valve plugs, as the 10 valve ones are no longer available. In October there was a slight weep from the rear differential front seal spotted on the MOT, this has now been replaced.

The UR starts up just as it should, and sounds fantastic exiting through the Scorpion stainless steel exhaust. The car drives as it should and pulls like a train through the 5-speed gearbox, and the change is nice and smooth. The shock absorbers have been replaced with Koni, so the ride is excellent as you would expect.

Bringing the Audi to a halt are a set of AP Racing Formula Big Brake calipers, with grooved discs at the front and drilled discs to the rear. These stop the car really well and in a straight line.

The Appeal

This is a lovely example of one of the most iconic four-wheel drive cars on the planet. A turbocharged 2.1 litre 5-cylinder engine, and in its day, a state of the art four-wheel drive system with diff locks, put the Audi in a class of its own.

The Audi is original inside and has had minimal work done to the exterior, yet it is still a really well presented classic, which has clearly been cherished by its few owners. On the mechanical side of things it is clear from the paperwork that it has wanted for nothing, and has been maintained regardless of cost.

This is your chance to own a piece of Audi history with the stunning iconic UR Quattro.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
