1984 Land Rover Series III Lightweight

Highlights

・Usable and cherished Military Land Rover
・Service reports and receipts spanning several decades
・No advisories on previous MOT

The Background

20th century Land Rovers are synonymous with military and agricultural needs. After all, there’s been no other brand in Europe that’s had such a tried and tested model with a largely unchanged recipe. Whatever the landscape, whatever the terrain – there’s always been a Land Rover that’s been up to the task.
The versatility of these vehicles earnt Land Rover thousands of orders from the likes of the British Army, the RAF as well as armies and special operations units from countries across the globe. With the ability to be built to any specification, there was no limit to what the Land Rover could achieve, the RAF even used them to start some of their aircrafts!
Facing increased needs to ship vehicles across the globe, the Lightweight was spawned as a response vehicle that was kept as simple and as light as possible. Engines were kept relatively unchanged from production models to simplify the production process and ensure that repairs and parts were easily sourced and undertaken wherever in the world they were.

The History

Starting service on the 13/11/1984, this lightweight was used as a reserve vehicle by the Royal Logistic Corps before its retirement on the 18/11/1997.
A 1984 production year means that B541 UFK is one of the very last Lightweights to have ever been commissioned before the Series III bowed out to the first of the Defenders that would go on to sell over 2 million units to the public alone.
The current vendor has had the vehicle for over 10 years, and despite having a large collection of interesting vehicles, the Lightweight has remained one of his favourites. However, having deliberated over it for some time, the tough decision to sell has been made, as a result of not having the time the vehicle deserves anymore.

The Paperwork

A whole folder of paperwork is provided with the vehicle, transporting you all the way back to its time spent in the military. Included within this documentation are its service records, service reports as well as its release from duty and over 20 years of receipts from its retirement years.
A valid MOT runs to March 2022 to which its previous check-up resulted in no advisories.

The Exterior

There’s no mistaking this Series III Lightweight from the outside, with its military green paint still as strong as its time in service and all paint markings still extremely prevalent.
All exterior features such as the lights are in-tact, and the canopy has no tears or faults either. Military stickers remain on the vehicle as well as those that show that is has been involved with Lightweight enthusiast groups in the past, highlighting its cared-for nature.

The Interior

If you’re looking for luxury, then this is not the car for you! The interior is pretty much the same as the day that it left the military, with no dramatic changes and seats still plump.

The Mechanics

All mechanical parts are in order, with all switches and features working as they should. It is important to note that whilst this is a RHD model, the speedometer and clock are listed in KM/H. Whilst this appears to have been picked up by a tester many years ago, testers of more recent years haven’t picked up on this and therefore has travelled around 61,600 miles over its near 40-year existence.

The Appeal

For those interested in military history and service vehicles, this presents itself as an ample opportunity to acquire a great example of a usable army-supplied Land Rover. With a huge supply of history, and clear MOT meaning that the next owner will inherit the story of this lightweight and ensure that it’s legacy lives on for many years to come.
