The Mercedes SL is the second longest serving model under the marque following closely behind the G Wagon. That should give you some indication as to how popular the SL is and for how long its been considered one of the best in its field.
This particular generation of SL, the R107, started production in 1971 and went on all the way to 1989. It is regarded as a class act from a time when Mercedes were well known for high build quality and fantastic reliability. The generation of SL was popular with celebrities and anyone who was anyone in the 80s , had an SL.DSC_8577.jpg3.88 MB
The History
The current owner purchased the car from a prestige dealer in Lancashire in 2016. With it being a weekend toy and access to his garage is limited he has only put a few thousand miles on it since purchasing it.
Previous to his ownership the car was owned by two separate individuals while it resided in the Isle of Man. During this time it was used sparingly hence the overall low mileage and fantastic condition for what is now a 37 year old car.
Due to lack of use the current owner has decided to part with it so that someone else may enjoy it.DSC_8570.jpg1.8 MB
The Paperwork
The car comes with the original service book in which a number of service stamps are recorded (as pictured) the history of MOTs and servicing receipts. Receipts for things like the replacement hood window are also present. The Mercedes original service book wallet is also present as are two original Mercedes spare keys.DSC_8612.jpg4.07 MB
The Interior
The interior is classically 80s and German, brown half leather and velour with a pattern and a huge steering wheel. Everything works as it should and is in great condition.DSC_8603.jpg3.07 MB
The Exterior
The exterior is in very nice original condition with only one real thing to note, when the current owner acquired the vehicle is had a spoiler attached to the boot lid which he had removed and the boot lid repainted. The paintwork in this area is not as good as the rest of the finish on the remainder of the car but as you can see from the photos its only noticeable when you're extremely close.
The wheels are in fantastic condition and the fabric hood has had a new Perspex window fitted in the last 5 years. There is also an additional removable body coloured hard top and stand that the owner has stated will come with the vehicle.DSC_8557.jpg3.52 MB
The Mechanics
The car drives well with no knocks or bangs and the auto box changes up and down without issue.
During the current owner’s possession, the car has only required the annual servicing and a replacement water pump which has been done.
Mercedes SL models from all eras tend to hold their value well, if your in the market for a 2 door classic convertible from this period then the SL should definitely be up there in your considerations.
Great handling, classic stylish looks and superior build quality mean that it’s a class act even by todays standards.
If you want to avoid the sea of modern convertible dullness and are looking for a classic convertible with character and the mechanical reliability to be ready to go for B road blast at a moments notice, and turn heads whilst doing it , this car is definitely worth a look.
