  • Solid and well-presented
  • Lots of invoices and bills

THE APPEAL

The “W123” range of executive saloons and estate cars represented a massive success for Mercedes-Benz between their introduction in 1975 and their eventual replacement 11 years later.

Over 2.5 million were sold worldwide, with the model soon garnering a reputation for being one of the most solidly built and long-lasting cars ever made.

Indeed, there are still thousands of them in daily use all over the globe, many with over a million miles on the clock and still providing dutiful taxi service in far-flung corners of Africa.

With that kind of longevity – especially for the diesel models – this estate example, the 300TD, is barely run-in. Fresh form long-term ownership, the five-cylinder oil burner is one of the first cars to have truly popularised diesel in the UK and Europe.

It’s a bit of a legend, all told, and this one is exactly as they should be – unspoilt, original and ready to cover thousands of more miles.

As practical, family-friendly classics go, you’ll struggle to find better.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Owned by previous keeper since 1995
  • Repainted in 2015
  • Good maintenance history
  • MOT August 2022
  • UK V5C

The W123 has been in the care of a lady owner in Hove, East Sussex, from 1995 until earlier this year. Between them, she and the vendor represent two of only four keepers that the car has ever had since it first hit the road 38 years ago.

It has an advisory-free MOT valid until August 2022, a UK V5C and a folder full of old bills and service receipts, including one for some bodywork repairs carried out in 2015.

It has clearly been well loved and maintained and is now ready to continue providing dependable service for a new classic-friendly family.

THE INTERIOR

  • Beige cloth trim
  • Original radio-cassette
  • Excellent dash and door cards
  • Sunroof
  • Five-seater model

The hard-wearing beige cloth trim still looks very respectable with only minor wear to the driver’s seat bolster. The headlining, carpets and door cards are in great order and the wood-effect dash inserts are in fine condition, too.

It’s a five-seater rather than a seven, but the seatbelt shackles and floor mountings are there should you wish to instal a seven-seater conversion kit. The original tool kit is present and the boot area is in good, clean condition.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Classic solid beige
  • Repainted in 2015
  • Solid underneath

The W123 is in fine overall condition with no obvious flaws or damage, other than minor marks, scuffs and stone chips.

It was repainted a few years back in its original solid beige and the paint retains a great shine, while all of the chrome and trim, including the wonderful body-coloured hubcaps, are in good, presentable order.

The underside appears to be very solid where visible and the tailgate – often rusty – is in great condition.

THE MECHANICS

  • 3.0-litre inline five
  • Automatic transmission
  • Famously strong powertrain
Mercedes-Benz was one of the forts manufacturers to make diesel engines acceptable in non-commercial vehicles and the W123 soon became one of the best-known diesel cars in the world, it’s distinctive five-cylinder unit renowned for its ability to cover hundreds of thousands of miles without drama.
This one is coupled to an automatic transmission so it’s no speed demon, but it has plenty of torque and is relaxing and pleasant to drive, capable of holding its own in modern traffic.

The vendor says it drives really well with no known faults.

SUMMARY

This is a terrific classic for the family, or to keep in reserve as a useful tip run and shopping vehicle one weekend and a classic show car the next.

It’s wonderfully versatile, very cool and still more than capable of being used every single day – something it should easily take in its stride.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
