Arresting William Towns ‘folded paper’ styling
The Appeal
In the late 1970s Aston Martin needed revenue. Adding extra doors to the V8 coupe to create a new saloon was inexpensive and inspired.
Buyers loved the idea and hundreds of much-needed deposits flooded in. Encouraged, Aston Martin decided to totally redesign the car, commissioning William Towns – who had created the original design – to deliver something far more radical.
Radical is certainly the resulting car’s calling card. Using then de-rigeur ‘folding paper’ wedge styling, the Series 2 was astonishing. It looked unlike anything else on the market and at £50,000 costs were in the same category.
It wasn’t a success and just 645 Lagondas left the factory over 12 years. This is one of the last Series 2 cars sporting the ‘pure’ original styling and fitted with four big fat Weber carburettors. Appearing very well kept across interior and exterior, it has recently been imported to the UK so is ready to register and enjoy.

The Series 2 Lagonda shocked reviewers when it was new and its impact is little diminished nearly 50 years on. It is an arresting design and yet one that is well resolved, cleverly transforming the V8 underpinnings into a much larger saloon of a radically different hue.
Surprise and delight features abound whether you are walking around the car or peering inside. Pop up headlamps, twin fuel fillers, chiselled nose and that’s before you encounter the digital dash, touch button controls and boxy dashboard.
We know little of this car’s history unfortunately but the condition appears to be unrestored and original. As such it is very well presented with clean, straight panels showing no damage or rust and an interior that follows the theme with little wear and good finish. Only light deterioration to the veneers detracts but it is not unsightly and a relatively easy repair if deemed necessary.
5.3litre Tadek Marek Aston Martin engine with Aston Martin Lagonda cam covers
Four Weber carburettors across top of engine helping delivery 280bhp
Durable and reliable Chrysler Torqueflite three speed automatic gearbox
0-60mph in 8.8secs
Rear wheel drive
Conventional V8 coupe underpinnings including suspension and chassis
Limited history, but we are informed that the car runs and drives. Owing to non-use in recent years, it would be advisable to recommission the vehicle prior to road use.
Beneath the outré bodywork lies a rather more conventional V8 with a bank of four big Webers delivering fuel. As this is Aston Martin’s superb Tadek Marek 5.3litre V8, that is certainly another reason to relish these rare and desirable cars.
This car is one of the last Series 2 examples so retains those Webers, which help delivery 280bhp via a sturdy Chrysler Torqueflite gearbox to the rear wheels. rcuQAASBr7lwQ6cAT5jy0v7w7O1IYAgO7B50mwuM.jpg930.35 KB
