1985 Mercedes-Benz 230E (W123)

Highlights

  • Outstandingly original
  • Time-warp condition interior
  • Low ownership and low mileage
  • Excellent history/documentation

The Appeal

Built during Mercedes’ golden years of high-quality, over-engineered cars, the W123 was the successor of the W114, with 2.7 million units sold between November 1975 and January 1986, with the 230 E (as seen here) totalling 442,000 units built.
This particular example is a true time-warp of a car. Purchased new by an Olympic Airlines pilot, the car remained in the same ownership for 20+ years, being used gently to shuttle the then-owner between their home in Ascot and Heathrow Airport. Reportedly dry-stored throughout its lifetime, the history folder is truly fantastic, and it is evident that this 230E has been cosseted throughout its existence.

History & Paperwork

  • Extensive history folder, including a copy of the W123 Book and other period press cuttings
  • V5 registered keepers document, showing just 2 former keepers
  • Strong service history, comprised of invoices and a stamped service record
  • Original leather document folder from the supplying dealer, with a brace of OE service and maintenance manuals
  • Supplied new by Sunningdale Carriage Co to the first owner of 20+ years
  • Wonderfully original, never knowingly modified, welded or filled

The Interior

  • Described as being in “time warp” condition by the vendor
  • Outstanding throughout, a truly cherished example
  • Virtually no discernible wear to the seats, rubber over-mats or door cards for a vehicle of this age
  • Minor usage patina on high-traffic areas such as the steering wheel, shifter and centre console, but significantly below what would be considered commensurate for the vehicle’s age and mileage
  • Manual sunroof, with no reported water ingress or operation issues
  • No known faults with any of the switches, systems or displays

The Exterior

  • Never knowingly welded or filled, wonderfully original
  • Both the front and rear valence show signs of corrosion and wear, and would benefit from attention, though they are perfectly usable as they sit
  • Original supplying dealer plate retained on the rear
  • The rear and side windows retain the original registration etching
  • The paintwork is in excellent overall condition, as is the bodywork with no signs of any accident damage, mis-aligned panels or heavy wear
  • The chrome roof rails wear some light patina and minor imperfections, as do the bumpers and trims, and there are other small age-related patches of wear, which have been highlighted in the extensive photo gallery below
  • All four wheels are in excellent condition, wrapped in matching Uniroyal tyres

The Mechanicals

  • Starts on-the-button, with no sign of any hesitation or difficulty starting
  • Happily idles for extended periods of time with no faults
  • The engine bay / block / ancillaries was not valeted since it shows the original factory wax rust proofing as the seller wanted it to be cherished and not lost
  • There is some corrosion visible on the underside of the bonnet, particularly on the nearside rear corner
  • Recently serviced
  • Shift-smoothing gearbox
  • Underneath  has never been knowingly welded
  • Current MoT valid until 18 January 2024

Summary

Outstandingly original and with the first owner for 20+ years, this is a rare opportunity to obtain a low mileage, low ownership W123.
Described by the vendor as “arguably the best saloon car of the 20th century” it’s hard to counter that statement, with the volume of W123s built and their legendary reputation for build quality and longevity endearing them to enthusiasts and nostalgic drivers alike.
Offered for sale with an interior that beggars belief and only in need of what appears to be superficial external TLC (and a little attention to the aforementioned OSF jacking point) this is one not to be missed by anyone looking to buy a W123.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
