The Appeal
Originally intended as a Land Rover replacement for the British Armed Forces, the Mini Moke was instead adopted by civilians as a ‘beach car’, much like the Citroën Méhari, VW Trekker or Fiat Jolly. The Moke also inspired several spinoffs, with various fibreglass kits and now even an electric version!
This is often regarded as one of the best-built unofficial Mokes, called an AEM Scout. It was built in South Wales and constructed from high-quality zinc-plated steel which made it perfect for those enjoying these vehicles by the sea. Using Mini mechanicals much like the original Moke, it’s a great choice for anyone seeking one of these much-loved little beach cars. AEM Scouts were made for one year only, so examples such as this are a real rarity.
This car needs some work before returning to the road, but as the photos show, it looks to be in very good condition for its age. It retains its period AEM colour scheme and also comes with a set of the original Weller wheels besides the aftermarket alloys currently fitted. The vendor informs us that the engine requires replacement and a used spare item is included in the sale. For those seeking a winter project, especially anyone with experience in Mini mechanics, this would be a great buy.
