1987 Ford Capri 280 Turbo Technics

Highlights

  • One of the first 500 ‘Brooklands’ built
  • Very rare in-period Turbo Technics conversion
  • Low mileage car with good history file
  • Very good condition inside and out
  • Standard car outside the turbo conversion

The Appeal

The original plan for the final Capri was a turbo-equipped model fettled by the firm’s Special Vehicle Products group. That got rowed back to what became known as the 280, a beautifully finished, LSD-equipped car that is rightly considered the ‘ultimate’ Capri by enthusiasts. 1,038 were built, the first 500 using fresh shells and a slightly lighter shade of ‘Brooklands Green’ paintwork, which was – fact fans - influenced by the Peugeot 309GTI Goodwood.
One company, however, was transfixed by those original turbo-charged plans. That was Turbo Technics, a firm long associated with the Capri,  including  the Tickford conversion. It offered a standard 200bhp and a 230bhp ‘total performance’ conversion for any Capri.
Up to 130 Capris benefitted, only a handful of them 280s like this low mileage one. Upgraded by Turbo Technics on 9th June 1989, not long after it was first registered, it is an exceptionally rare example of an already highly desirable Capri. Only one subtle Turbo Technics badge gives the game away on this car’s standard, beautifully preserved bodywork. This is a superb example and we suspect you may struggle to find another.

History and Paperwork

  • First UK registered on 12th October 1987
  • VIN records indicate this is car 100 of the 1,038 280s built
  • This would place it as one of the first 500 using new shells and a slightly lighter Brooklands Green finish
  • It also has the all-important T7 chassis paint code indicating that this is a genuine Brooklands
  • Good history file showing work to wheel bearings in 2021 and new headlining the same year
  • Turbo Technics reportedly converted up to 130 cars offering two power options, 200bhp and 230bhp
  • A chassis plate on this car and rear badges confirm the conversion took place on 9th June 1989
  • Old MOTs verify the mileage
  • Last MOT expired on 11th July 2022 with 52,109 miles on last test and no advisories
  • Car has covered virtually no miles since that last test in July 2021
  • Acquired by the vendor on 23rd July 2021

The Condition

  • Very original car with factory correct finish across exterior and interior
  • Cleverly standard car with only a discreet Turbo Technics badge to boot giving the game away
  • Straight, solid bodywork with no visible corrosion to panels, including common Capri areas
  • Underside continues the theme presenting well with no issues to report
  • No structural advisories on last MOT and just 7miles travelled since the test
  • Retains its ‘280’ factory trim including pinstriping and decals, Brooklands Green paint and Raven Recaros
  • Seven spoke RS 15in alloys in good order with no marks detected
  • Tyres in good order with plenty of tread and good condition
  • Lights and glasswork well kept with no deterioration or misting visible
  • Headlining replaced in 2021 and in good order
  • Manually operated sunroof in good order with original headlining trim showing light marks
  • Standard interior with period correct Pioneer radio cassette
  • Seats and carpets appear to be original and show only light marks of age
  • Dashboard well kept with clear dials including plastic shrouds
  • Auxiliary turbo gauge fitted under dashboard

The Mechanics

  • 2,792cc Cologne V6 developing 160bhp in standard form
  • This car appears to be fitted with the 200bhp Turbo Technics Garrett T3 turbo upgrade
  • This delivers 0-60mph in a very healthy 6.5secs
  • 5spd manual gearbox
  • Upgraded engine area including red strut brace and hoses
  • Magnex stainless steel exhaust system
  • Good history file indicating ongoing maintenance
  • Low mileage car verified by MOT history
  • Has covered just seven miles since last MOT test in July 2021 when there were no advisories

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
