Honourably excepting the XR4 and later XR4x4 models, Ford’s Sierra range wasn’t regarded as particularly exciting or memorable until the RS Cosworth entered the fray in 1986. It arrived with all the subtlety of a bomb, sporting a tea-tray rear spoiler, outlandish body kits and staggering performance which finally justified the Sierra’s place in the fast lane of any motorway. 

The Cosworth was a dramatic presence in any Ford showroom in the Eighties, and this particular example is no less dramatic today. It has been sparingly used since it was manufactured, having covered a barely credible (yet independently validated) 3,740 miles in almost four decades. As such, it is an unmarked time capsule, no obvious blemishes on that glossy white paintwork. The bodywork appears flawless, while the underside of the car is immaculate courtesy of a recent cleaning and oil-wax. 

The showroom ambience continues internally, where the current owner describes the trim as “intact, original, and unmodified.” The Recaro seats, door cards, carpets and headliner appear untouched by time, and the upholstery reportedly retains its original finish and firmness despite the seat base fabrics being slightly loose in places. The steering wheel is unusual in showing signs of use, with the autoreverse Ford cassette player and dashboard rocker switches seemingly unused; it’s questionable whether anything has ever been placed in the boot, such is its condition. 

Having being dry stored from 2019 to 2024, this car received a £4,000 recommissioning in early 2025 by Cosworth specialist Graham Goode Racing, who also verified the mileage as genuine after the stamped service book was lost during a 2022 house move.

Recommissioning works included a replacement timing belt, new dump valve and a new battery, alongside a full service and an MOT which – unsurprisingly – showed no advisories. Few cars of the Eighties are this well preserved, and even fewer offer the visceral driving thrills of a barely run-in Cossie. No wonder its current owner describes it as “a truly outstanding collector’s example” and “one of the lowest-mileage, most original examples known to exist.”
