Highlights

  • Extremely elegant dark blue exudes European luxury
  • 5.0L V8 equipped
  • Substantial service history and recent maintenance at a cost of £10,000
  • Porsche’s flagship model at the time

The Appeal

The Porsche 928 was designed as a 911 killer. Porsche engineers build it with the intention to replace the 911 as their flagship model, but with Porsche’s first-ever V8 production engine crammed into the compartment in front of the driver, Porsche purists were hesitant to bite. However, after some refinements, the 928s popularity grew, and it had developed an avid following over its 18-year production run.
With that in mind, the spec and condition of this particular 928 S4 is exceptional. Clearly designed as a grand tourer with an automatic transmission mated to and unstoppable Porsche V8, the ease-of-use and luxurious ergonomics are something you’d be happy to find yourself sat in, even for extended periods. All it takes to brighten your day is to put the key into the ignition and give it a turn.

The History and Paperwork

  • Genuine owner’s manual included
  • Substantial history file included with invoices for parts and labour
  • Current MOT expires 7 July 2023
  • 113,408 genuine miles
The current owner purchased the vehicle during the pandemic as a project to enjoy and restore along the way. With the original intention to tour the car for years to come, another project has now sprung up and the owner is now changing focus, as you do.
The history file shows the recent bits of work done, which have been mostly routine maintenance, but also some repair and replacement of wear parts. Just 4 months ago the vehicle received a torque-tube and torque converter overhaul as well as new cam belt and water pump, totalling £3,462 after completion. The vehicle has also recently been resprayed in the original colour, and wheels refurbished before being fitted with fresh tyres.

The Interior

  • Blue interior is stunning and unique
  • All electrical equipment said to be in working order
  • All original interior
Porsche’s top offering at the time, the 928 was designed for absolute luxury and comfort. Taking a seat in this one, it’s not hard to see the time and effort put into the engineering was well spent. As you begin to prepare yourself for driving, you take a quick glance at the beautifully executed gauges and instruments which are easy to read; you also take note that all of the controls seem to be well placed and within easy reach. The driving experience was surely designed to be effortless and enjoyable, just as a GT car should be. Even the instrument cluster moves along with the steering wheel when adjusted, so as to be perfectly visible no matter the size and shape of the driver.
The blue interior featured in this car has a certain elegance which perfectly suits the blue exterior. The overall feel of the interior is heavy with ‘80s styling, but not overly gaudy or even remotely over-bearing as such. It’s an elegance that is not often reflected in more modern cars.
The overall condition of the interior is good but used. While there is wear found on the seats and carpets, this does not at all detract from the elegance of the vehicle. The seats, front and rear, show some unobtrusive signs of wear, which is normal for a car of this age. Most trim is well composed, all present, and is in good condition. However, there is a bit of trim on the headliner which needs some attention as it is removing itself a bit from the roof, see photos. The carpets show no holes or scuffs; just a bit of dirt we wager could be cleaned up nicely. There are some buttons/knobs which have been broken and could be replaced, but still function; see photos here as well.
The boot is in overall good state, but could be cleaned and tidied under the carpets if desired.

The Exterior

  • Exterior repainted to high standard
  • Exterior trim in excellent condition
  • Lights and glass in great condition
The exterior of this 928 is impressive for its age. The paint is fresh and tidy apart from a scuff on the roof as pictured. The trim and rubbers are all intact and in great condition. There are a couple of normal road use imperfections in the front, but nothing at all out of the ordinary. All of the badges, accents and details are in top condition. The glass itself is in excellent condition with only minor road marks, being better than expected for the age of the car. The owner states it is well looked after and only comes out of the garage in dry conditions.
The wiper trim, rubbers, grilles, and exterior plastics are all intact and in above average condition.
The original wheels are in a refurbished state, and are all in excellent condition and show no signs of curb rash or any other really noticeable defects, just a couple marks here and there. The centre caps are all in above average condition.

The Mechanics

  • Servicing up to date and recent work completed
  • Owner states engine runs flawlessly
  • Extremely tidy engine bay
This 928 is up to date on general maintenance and has had a recent overhaul of the transmission, as well as major engine servicing in the form of cam belt and water pump. The current owner states the steering, braking, and acceleration all perform as they should for a flagship model. It’s fit to please and ready to take touring.
Popping the bonnet open, the engine compartment is in good order for its age. The owner states there no smoke, or unusual noises to note. The automatic transmission connects smoothly in all gears, and the engine pulls hard and sounds healthy. The owner also states the steering feels tight and responsive, just as it should!

Summary

While this may not have brought an end to the 911’s reign as Porsche’s flagship model, it sure did cause quite a stir. It is a very unique Porsche, being their first production V8 model, and only FR layout V8 model ever offered. They were clearly trying to break the mould and bring something surprising to the table, something a little larger and luxurious than expected, but still uniquely Porsche in its performance and overall feel. This particular 928, being an S4 version, is a prime example of what they were trying to achieve, and is presented in an excellent colourway.
It is a unique and endearing car that would fit right into any collector’s garage. As a grand tourer, it is also an excellent buy for any enthusiast who wishes to hit the open road in a very unique Porsche, which sets itself apart from the increasingly common 911.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
