The Appeal

Toeing the line perfectly between rugged off-road capabilities and high-end comfort, the first iteration of the Range Rover, now referred to as the ‘Classic’, has now become a cult icon. This example has been enjoyed properly throughout its life between its owners, now it is your chance to get behind the wheel and enjoy it too.

She runs and drives as she should with no complaining, but she could benefit from a little TLC. With a little bit of work, you will have a perfect example.

The History and Paperwork

  • Hitting the roads in July of 1987 this Classic has been enjoyed and looked after properly by its owners
  • It appears that it spends its early life up in Cheshire
  • Getting its first service at 2 years old and only 2,300 miles it then has a couple more services stamped in its book
  • Along with the original service book, there are a few original Range Rover handbooks
  • There are also two keys present with this car
  • You’ll also see that there are a lot of MOT certificates that will come with the car
  • These range from its most recent MOT this month, to the older A5 variants
  • There are also some tax reminders and a lot of invoices
  • Ranging from a starter motor to a new alternator, there are a good few invoices to have a look through
  • It is now your chance to get behind the wheel of this sort after classic

The Interior

  • Highly original interior
  • The cloth seats are presented in very good condition
  • You might expect to see some wear to the driver’s seat especially, however, the one fitted to this car is in great condition
  • The fabric front to back is very good indeed
  • It also complements the white exterior rather nicely
  • In the rear, you’ll find a fold-down armrest between the two seats
  • Up in front of the driver are all of the driving instruments
  • Easily read these dials work as they should
  • The odometer shows 132,000 miles, which is perfect for one of these
  • The Rover V8 under the bonnet and auto gearbox should be good for a lot longer
  • To the left of the dials are all of the toys to play with
  • With buttons for the fog lights, sunroof, and modern radio
  • On top of the transfer case gear selector, you’ll see that this Range Rover has Diff-Lock
  • The carpets on the floor are protected by big rubberised over mats
  • Up top, the headliner has not sagged at all
  • Although a little marked in places it is still attached which is rather rare for a Solihull product of this age
  • You’ll also spot a sunroof set into the roof
  • This sunroof still works as you’d expect it to, at the touch of a button it retracts letting in lots of air and light
  • From the short time spent with the car, it doesn’t appear to leak
  • There are a few areas up on the plastic dashboard that has some damage, but this does not affect the use of the car whatsoever
  • All of the door cards are presented with the original fixtures and fittings
  • These include electric windows throughout and a few sections of wood
  • Range Rover Classics are known to rot in a couple of interior areas
  • One of these areas are just within the rear door and above the wheel, both sides of this example are nice and solid
  • Another area is the rear tailgate, although presented with a few minor spots of surface corrosion, there shouldn’t be any need for costly repairs
  • The top of the split tailgate, where you’ll find the rear window, has recently benefitted from new gas struts
  • Within the boot itself, you’ll find the spare wheel, a parcel shelf in good condition, and lots of space for your belongings
  • Overall, the interior of this Classic is in rather good condition indeed
  • There is no need for costly and time consuming re-trimming
  • So, you should have no issue jumping in and driving home in comfort

The Exterior

  • A classic shape, the first-generation Range Rover is a bit of a looker
  • From head on it looks rather menacing indeed, you wouldn’t want it sitting in your rear-view mirror that’s for sure
  • All of the panels on the exterior appear to be nice and straight, but there are some signs of paint bubbling
  • But there are no obvious large holes that will need patching
  • Poking your head underneath you’ll find a nice solid chassis
  • This is another Achilles heel of a classic Range Rover
  • The current owner did mention that, although not immediately necessary, this car might benefit from a re-spray
  • There is also a small chip to the windscreen, but nothing that should cause an MOT failure
  • With this blank canvas opportunity, you could turn this Range Rover into whatever you want
  • Thanks to the demand for these cars, you may even wish to ‘Restomod’ it and have a nice modern car underneath with proper classic looks
  • On each corner, you’ll find 16-inch alloy wheels
  • These give you a bit more sidewall which aids comfort, and off-road capabilities
  • All of these alloys are wrapped with expensive General Grabber AT3’s
  • Providing grip both on and off-road they will be excellent as we enter into the wetter months
  • You have an excellent opportunity to make this Range Rover you own, who wouldn’t want that chance?

The Mechanics

  • Under the bonnet, you’ll find the legendary 3.5l V8
  • Today this engine still works like the day it was installed
  • It fired up easily and idled nicely
  • The car was then driven to the location with ease
  • Its automatic gearbox changed between the gears nicely, its no dual-clutch auto, but it is perfect for this car
  • The current owner has just put it through its MOT so you have a full year's worth of worry-free motoring
  • On the road, there weren’t any audible knocks from the suspension
  • Thanks to its automatic gearbox and V8 engine this car is an excellent cruiser
  • Once up to temperature you can extract a little bit of its potential, but you don’t get one of these to set land speed records
  • You get one of these to go anywhere
  • Thanks to its permanent 4WD and transfer box it is as good off-road as it is on road
  • Effectively two cars in one, this is a great performing car

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
