The Appeal
There aren't many off-roaders with the enduring popularity of the Suzuki Jimny. The SJ410 was born out of the purchase of the Hope Motor Company - a tiny little Japanese carmaker that had been fiddling with the concept of a small off-roader. Suzuki saw great potential in the project, and clearly it proved a strong shout - the Jimny is near-globally beloved, with characteristics distinctly perkier than its contemporaries thanks to the compact wheelbase. It was rather like a Japanese mountain goat.
This 1987 car proves exactly why - with its robust 970cc petrol engine, high and low ratio box, selectable 4-wheel drive, and a 4-speed manual gearbox, it was made for tackling tough terrain. The fact it's a lovely bright red example with a working patina, of course, helps capture the Jimny's characterful personality.
